Members of the Erode Urban District Congress Committee on Wednesday (April 16, 2025) sent 50 letters to President of India Droupadi Murmu, demanding that the Waqf Amendment Act be revoked.

Led by committee president T. Thiruselvam, the Congress cadre stated that the Act, which was passed in Parliament, recently received presidential assent. They claimed that the Act undermines the autonomy of Waqf properties and facilitates the seizure of lands used by members of the Muslim community.

According to them, the amendment grants full authority to the District Collector to determine whether a property is a Waqf property or not — a responsibility that was previously handled by the Waqf Tribunal. They also said that permitting non-Muslim members on Waqf Boards is unacceptable, as the Constitution guarantees the community the freedom to self-govern. The letters urged the President to revoke the Act to ensure that community members can live without fear.
