As CNG prices hiked in Chennai to Rs 95 per kilogram on Tuesday, auto-rickshaw drivers in Chennai are demanding an immediate and stable revision of meter fares. While the fuel rate has remained steady through April and May, contrasting recent price hikes in cities like Delhi, local drivers state that the current pricing structure makes operations unsustainable without a matching increase in official passenger fares. Congress demands withdrawal of Haj fair raise, calls it burdensome

The Congress on Sunday demanded the withdrawal of the Haj Committee of India circular raising the Haj airfare by Rs 10,000 per pilgrim and alleged that under the Modi government, the cost of performing Haj has risen to levels that place the pilgrimage beyond the comfortable reach of ordinary Indian families. The opposition party’s demand came after the Haj Committee of India raised the Haj airfare by Rs 10,000 per pilgrim this year due to a sharp global rise in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices. ‘Fair wickets would be boring’: Muttiah Muralitharan says IPL is big business — and bowlers just have to accept it | Cricket News

4 min readUpdated: Apr 30, 2026 10:59 AM IST On a night Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down 243 with eight balls to spare, their spin bowling coach Muttiah Muralitharan had a simple message for bowlers struggling in IPL 2026: accept it, and adapt. “It’s very difficult for a bowler because these days every team has an opening pair that doesn’t care about in or out, they just go after the bowling,” Muralitharan said at the post-match press conference. “When we used to play, about 40 to 50 runs was a good score with one wicket losing in six overs, now the average is 70 to 80.” The shift, he said, was as much about mindset as skill. He pointed to uncapped 23-year-old Salil Arora’s no-look six off Jasprit Bumrah as the clearest example. “Even a good bowler goes for a six, even Bumrah goes for one or two balls. When a new boy Salil hits a six, it’s unbelievable — you don’t think someone with the calibre of Bumrah comes and a young boy will hit …

RGI orders village-wise mapping of vulnerable areas to ensure fair Census| India News

New Delhi, The Registrar General of India has directed district magistrates and municipal commissioners to identify villages, habitations and communities vulnerable to threats or intimidation that could hamper the free conduct of the Census and carry out vulnerability mapping. RGI orders village-wise mapping of vulnerable areas to ensure fair Census The RGI took cognisance of the possibility that some areas could be left out of the Census due to inaccessibility or prevailing socio-economic realities. It has asked officials to conduct a revenue village-wise exercise to “identify the villages/hamlets/habitats and segments of people vulnerable to any threat, intimidation or interference” with the free conduct of the Census. The RGI also directed that special areas such as military installations will not be covered during the ongoing housing census. A pan-India helpline number 1855 has also been launched for the Census. “The Charge Officers shall do this exercise by touring their areas extensively and in consultation with the local village officials – patwaris, lekhpals, talattis and village administrative officers,” a directive issued by Registrar General of India Mrityunjay …

Is sports quota in India a cheat code, or a fair reward for those who deserve it?

Is sports quota in India a cheat code, or a fair reward for those who deserve it?

In a country obsessed with government jobs, the sports quota is often viewed as a mysterious side door. That is mostly because many don’t know or understand how it works – its pathways, the required eligibility, etc. But when done right, it can pave the way for a promising career in sport, without the financial instability that usually follows athletes in India. How did the idea of ‘Sports Quota’ come about? First off, why does the government even care if you can kick a ball or swing a racket? Back in the 1950s and 1960s, India realised it had plenty of clerks; apart from Hockey, it wasn’t exactly performing on the Olympic stage. To fix this, public giants like the Railways and ONGC started hiring athletes to build departmental teams. It was a win-win scenario: the organisation boosted its brand, and athletes got a steady paycheck so they didn’t have to keep a backup career option. Today, this is a formal policy where up to 5% of Group C or clerical vacancies can be reserved …
