How can Bengal election be fair when so many genuine voters are left out, asks Shashi Panja

How can Bengal election be fair when so many genuine voters are left out, asks Shashi Panja

This house came under attack on March 14. Did you ever think you would personally become a victim of political violence?  We knew that the BJP is a violent party, it’s politics is very shallow. But this was a new low. It was total hooliganism and they are proud about what they did. It is shocking and humiliating because I was in my own house, my political office, and I was putting up political banners. I was clearly overpowered. What surprises me most is the cowardice. You have a lady in front of you; you can’t come running with a brick and thump it in her stomach. They did it on a day when the Prime Minister was in the city.   You’re a senior leader in the party and three-time MLA and Minister as well. What do you think of the 2026 election and upcoming elections? And how do you think it is different from the 2021 election?  If the BJP, which says ‘hum log aarahe hain (we will come to power)’, is so confident of winning this election, then why did you actually have to do an SIR (Special Intensive Revision)? You do a routine intensive revision like you did in Assam. Why did you have to go so deep to disenfranchise so many people? …

A bench of Justices Sarang V Kotwal and Sandesh D Patil passed a ruling on appeal by the man against conviction by the special court designated under the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, argued through Advocates Yug Mohit Chaudhry and Payoshi Roy. The court also refused the state’s plea seeking confirmation of the death penalty for him. The high court flagged a violation of the fair trial procedure at “every stage” and the “unnecessary hurry” shown by the trial court judge in concluding the trial, and directed the special court to conduct the trial afresh. “Without commenting on the quality and capacity of the lawyer appointed by the accused (during trial), we are constrained to observe that the cross-examination did not meet the basic standard …

‘They have not been playing at one venue, and that is just not fair’

2 min readMar 22, 2026 01:32 PM IST Home advantage plays a significant role in the Indian Premier League. However, it does make it a bit tricky when a franchise has to play in two stadiums as its home conditions. Rajasthan Royals yet again have to deal with the same situation, playing their initial games in Guwahati, and then they go back to Jaipur. Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin pointed it out and said it is just not fair for Rajasthan to have two home venues. “I thought their team got a slight upgrade when they got both Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. But they have a lot of things going for them, as well as not going for them. They have not been playing at one venue, and that is just not fair. I know Riyan Parag is the captain, and he will get Support in Assam, I understand all that, but if you want to play, play the entire season there only,” R Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. “I was the Kings …
