Following a week of widespread flight cancellations and soaring ticket prices, the government has imposed temporary caps on domestic airfares to ease the burden on passengers. IndiGo cancelled over 1,600 flights nationwide in the past week, causing chaos across airports, reducing seat availability, and prompting what the Ministry of Civil Aviation described as an “unreasonable surge” in fares on major routes. In a move to make premium public transport more affordable, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) on Friday has announced a reduction in the weekly pass fare for its Vajra AC bus services. The revised fare will come into effect immediately. Since 1 August 2025, the Vajra AC weekly pass had been priced at ₹750, excluding toll charges. The BMTC has now lowered the cost to ₹700, bringing a ₹50 reduction for regular commuters. The corporation in a release stated that the decision was taken to offer commuters more competitive pricing and to encourage a greater shift towards public transport in the city. The Vajra AC buses, which serve several IT corridors and high-density routes, are widely used by office-goers and daily users for alternative to private vehicles and ride-hailing services. Despite mounting pressure from commuters, elected representatives, and Right to Information (RTI) requests, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has refused to publish or share the report prepared by the fare fixation committee (FFC) that recommended the controversial Namma Metro fare hike earlier this year. The report, which was prepared by a three-member FFC comprising R. Tharani, former judge of the Madras High Court; Satyendra Pal Singh, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs; and E.V. Ramana Reddy, retired IAS officer and former additional chief secretary to the Government of Karnataka, remains inaccessible to the public. The Hindu also filed an RTI application in February 12 with the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs seeking a copy of the FFC report. The Ministry subsequently transferred the application to the managing director of BMRCL. However, no response has been received to date.
