India skipper Shubman Gill walks off field, retires hurt vs England in 1st ODI

2 min readUpdated: Jul 14, 2026 10:03 PM IST India captain Shubman Gill walked off injured during India’s run chase against England on Monday after scoring 80 runs. Gill was looking in good touch and had brought up a 100-run partnership with his T20I counterpart Shreyas Iyer before he walked away looking in visible discomfort. Gill, who had opened with Rohit Sharma saw his opening partner depart after 11 runs while Virat Kohli also couldn’t give his skipper much company, getting dismissed for 5. After the early blows, Gill and Iyer managed to steady the Indian innings. Gill was replaced by Washington Sundar who held fort as India lost 2 more quick wickets as Iyer and then KL Rahul departed in the space of one over. India would hope that Gill’s injury is a minor one or cramps because the last time he walked out of the field had left India without their skipper for the Test series vs South Africa last year. In that match, Gill had come in to bat and swept a …

Ahead of clash with Argentina, Salah leads the field in chances created

2 min readJul 6, 2026 05:35 PM IST Most Egyptian hopes will be centred on Mohamed Salah when the Pharaohs take on defending champions Argentina in the Round of 16 clash in Atlanta. It’s expected as well as the Liverpool legend is the most high-profile player in the line-up and would be expected to replicate, in some sense, what Lionel Messi would do for the South American giants. Salah has had to manage a hamstring issue throughout the World Cup campaign and though he has managed just one goal in the tournament – against New Zealand in the group stage – he did convert a penalty in the tie-breaker against Australia with a delightful Panenka kick. However, there’s still a metric in which Salah is leading the field in this World Cup. Sky Sports and statistics website FootMob reported that the Egypt captain tops the list of players who have created the most chances in the tournament. According to the numbers presented, going into the Round of 16 match, Salah and Belgium’s Leandro Trossard have …

‘Exhibitors ko dara-dhamkakar show lete hain’: Manoj Bajpayee questions big films’ monopoly, wants ‘level playing field’

Actor Manoj Bajpayee has emphasised the need for a ‘level playing field’ for films of all sizes and scales in India. He has said that the dominance and monopoly of big-budget films make it very difficult for small, independent films to find screens across the country. Manoj Bajpayee opens up about the cinema exhibition system in India. Manoj Bajpayee on government intervention in cinema exhibition In a recent conversation with HT, filmmaker Reema Kagti insisted that small films needed patronage, not ‘support’ from the audience. When we bring the same up with Manoj, the veteran actor responds, “With small films, patronage shuruaat hoti hai exhibition se. (patronage starts with exhibition). The day the government makes this policy that each and every film will get enough showcasing, then they will have some kind of a fair platform, a level playing field. Until we get that, it’s tough.” Manoj says he agrees with Reema’s assertion that independent cinema in India needs patronage, but wants that patronage to come from the administration, and for it to be infrastructural, …

The lone Afghan fan in the stands has friends on the field

3 min readJun 6, 2026 07:10 PM IST On his way to the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium in Mullanpur on Saturday morning, Khial Mohammad told his cab driver something worth remembering. Afghanistan, he said, stands very little chance against India. But the players will give their best. They always do. Mohammad had come alone. Of the 2,000-odd fans inside the ground, he was the only one waving an Afghanistan flag, standing in the harsh summer sun in the Harbhajan Singh pavilion. By afternoon, four other Afghan fans had trickled in to other parts of the ground. Until then, it was just him. He had reasons to be there beyond the match. Two of the players on the field are old friends. Nangeyalia Kharote, who made his Test debut on Saturday, is from Baghlan province. Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi is from Khost. Mohammad knows both from the junior cricket circuit back home. When Kharote’s name was called, Mohammad chanted it from the stands. A Kabul native, Mohammad has been studying at a private university near …
