Kolkata: At least six persons, including three children, have been reportedly killed following a major blast at an illegal firecracker factory at Patharpratima in South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal on Monday night. As per the information available so far, the blast took place at an illegal firecracker manufacturing factory at the residence of a local resident, Chandranath Banik, at around 10 p.m. on Monday. The local people were alerted by the sound of explosions, and when they reached the spot, they saw the entire house engulfed in flames. Locals started the initial fire extinguishing operations. Later, they were joined by a huge contingent of cops from the nearby Dholahat police station as well as personnel from the state fire services department. The fire was yet to be extinguished till this report was filed. As per the information available, six charred bodies, including three children, have been recovered so far. Image Source : FILE PHOTO Supreme Court On Tuesday, the Supreme Court asked the Delhi government why there was no permanent nationwide ban on firecrackers when air pollution remains a year-round issue in the national capital. The top court asked why restrictions are applied only during specific months in Delhi.  The Supreme Court asked the Delhi government to decide before November 25 on ‘perpetual’ firecracker ban after consulting stakeholders. The top court also directed the Delhi police commissioner to form special cell to impose firecrackers ban. The court observed that the implementation of firecracker ban was not imposed seriously by Delhi police. During the hearing of the matter, the Supreme Court said prima facie it is of the view that no religion promotes any activity which promotes pollution or compromises with health of people.  The court further directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to file a personal affidavit putting on record the steps taken by them to enforce firecrackers ban and asked all NCR states to come up before it and inform about the steps taken …

The Supreme Court on Monday slammed the Delhi government for failing to implement strict measures to curb air pollution during the festive season of Diwali. The apex court also demanded an response from the Delhi government and police to the ban on firecrackers. A top court bench headed by Justice S Oka stated that the firecracker ban in Delhi was “hardly implemented” and the effect was well visible since the pollution level was at an all-time high on Diwali. New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday demanded an “immediate” response from the Delhi government and police to the ban – which seems to exist on paper only – against firecrackers during Diwali, a ban that is announced, and ignored, every year, resulting in a suffocating blanket of toxic air smothering the national capital and surrounding regions for days after the festival is celebrated.
