In a significant operation aimed at safeguarding maritime security, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Monday (December 9) arrested 78 fishermen and seized two trawlers for fishing illegally within Indian waters. The Indian Coast Guard Ship, whilst on patrol along IMBL identified suspicious activity within Indian Maritime Zone. The ICG ship intercepted two Bangladesh fishing trawlers engaged in unauthorised fishing activities. The vessels were identified as “FV Laila-2” and “FV Meghna-5”, both registered in Bangladesh with 41 & 37 crew respectively. The trawlers were inspected at sea and subsequently, booked under the Maritime Zones of India Act, 1981. Both vessels were escorted to Paradip for further investigation. Australian police seized a record 2.3 tonnes of cocaine and arrested 13 people in raids after the suspects’ boat broke down off the coast of Queensland, authorities said Monday. The drugs had a sale value of 760 million Australian dollars ($494,000) and equaled as many as 11.7 million street deals if they had reached the country of 28 million people, federal police said in a statement. Investigators told reporters in Brisbane that the drugs were transported from an unidentified South American country. The arrests on Saturday and Sunday followed a monthlong investigation after a tipoff that the Comancheros motorcycle gang was planning a multi-ton smuggling operation, Australian Federal Police Commander Stephen Jay said. The smugglers made two attempts to transport the drugs to Australia by sea from a mothership floating hundreds of kilometers (miles) offshore, Jay said. It can be a scientific endeavour, with researchers mapping the movements of different fish species, identifying the feeding hot spots, and providing precise locations for the fishermen to hunt, thereby saving them time, money, and fuel in the process. Hyderabad-based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Systems (INCOIS), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), has been successfully issuing daily advisories on Potential Fishing Zones (PFZs) for tuna and other marine species by studying sea surface temperatures and chlorophyll distribution. The advisories are provided in English, Hindi, and eight coastal regional languages to benefit an estimated nine lakh or more fishing communities. Nutrient influx INCOIS scientists have now discovered that ‘Malabar sea upwelling’, the process of nutrient-rich deep water rising to the surface, plays a crucial role in determining mackerel abundance along southwest coast of India.  The influx of nutrients to the sea surface supports plankton growth, which attracts small fish for feeding and breeding. Even as the marine enforcement squad and the Coastal Police have claimed of an intensified patrol along the coastline, fishermen and fishing boat owners in Kozhikode have expressed displeasure over the increasing presence of boats and fishers from other States, who allegedly resort to illegal fishing methods. The demand for action against such illegal practices has come at a time when local fishers are witnessing a huge drop in daily catch and active working days owing to unexpected climate change. “High-beam lights are being used by fishers from other States, depleting fishing resources. Pair trawling using double nets has also made a re-entry,” said Abdul Majeed, a fisherman from the Chombala harbour. He added that enforcement squads mostly targeted local fishermen.
