Vaughan on Stephen Fleming taking England job

4 min readJul 31, 2026 04:11 PM IST Former England captain Michael Vaughan has backed Stephen Fleming’s appointment as the men’s team Test coach, but added that he may not have a captain like MS Dhoni to work with in the setup. Fleming, who was appointed the Test coach on Thursday, formed a successful coach-captain partnership with Dhoni and helped Chennai Super Kings win five IPL titles and two Champions League titles over 17 years. “We’re in a bit of a mess, but I’m sure Fleming will get it right. I’m sure he’ll get the team performing,” Vaughan wrote in his Telegraph column. “Fleming is very well respected, renowned for being a very good manager and tactician. I’ve seen him at the IPL and one of the problems he might discover in English cricket is that we do not have an MS Dhoni to be his captain. Dhoni ran the ship at CSK (Chennai Super Kings), and Fleming had some really good backroom coaches as well. Eric Simons was a wonderful bowling coach for him, …

Stephen Fleming to be appointed England’s Test coach | Cricket News

3 min readJul 30, 2026 09:38 AM IST Former Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming is in line to become the next England Test coach, according to reports in British media. Fleming recently stepped down as the coach of Indian Premier League franchise CSK — besides the Chennai team’s subsidiaries Joburg Super Kings in South Africa’s SA20 and Texas Super Kings in America’s Major League Cricket — after CSK ended 8th in the recent IPL.  According to a report in the Guardian, Fleming impressed the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in a series of interviews over the past two weeks. Should the 53-year-old be handed the coaching reins, he will join predecessor, compatriot, and former teammate Brendon McCullum, who remains in charge of England’s white-ball teams. The Guardian report added that while Fleming is likely to be in place for the tour of South Africa in December, an interim coach, probably Marcus Trescothick, could assume control of the side for the upcoming three-Test series against Pakistan from August 19. Fleming joined CSK as a …

Stephen Fleming linked with England coach role after CSK exit

4 min readJul 14, 2026 11:38 PM IST Former New Zealand captain and Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming is part of a nine-man shortlist to take over as England’s new Test team coach, a Daily Mail report said. The 53-year-old, who parted ways with the five-time IPL champions on Monday, has never coached in international cricket, but features in the list along with current Pakistan white-ball coach and fellow Kiwi Mike Hesson. Royal Challengers Bengaluru coach Andy Flower, who coached England between 2009 and 2014, is also part of the list. The report, however, stated that the Zimbabwean had told some of his friends he wasn’t sure about putting himself through the rigours of international coaching at the age of 58. RCB batting mentor Dinesh Karthik said that he would be very surprised if Flower took over the role, if offered. “In all seriousness, I think he’ll be a great candidate. He definitely should be one of the names considered, but I would be very surprised if he took it, considering where England are …

The Chennai Super Kings have parted ways with head coach Stephen Fleming after a successful stint, bringing to a close the IPL’s most successful coaching era. The franchise officially confirmed the news through social media, defining a benchmark in the tournament. The decision was finalised following the discussions between the former New Zealand captain and Super Kings management. The announcement follows a disastrous campaign over the last three seasons, during which the franchise failed to finish in the top four. Stephen Fleming, who began with Chennai as a player during the tournament’s inaugural season in 2008, transitioned into the head coach role in 2009. Over the 17-year stint, Chennai Super Kings secured five IPL titles, two Champions League Twenty20 crowns and achieved a record 12 playoff appearances, alongside featuring in 10 finals. Stephen Fleming Set to Continue as CSK Head Coach Despite Disappointing IPL 2026 Campaign

The former New Zealander Stephen Fleming is set to continue as CSK head coach despite a poor outing in the last two seasons. According to reports, the franchise is likely to continue with Fleming amidst the social media campaigns in the wake of back-to-back disappointing campaigns in the previous seasons. The five-time champions completed 10th in the 2025 season and eighth in the 2026 season, which has struck the franchise’s reputation around success and consistency. However, CSK appear unwilling to make a panic-driven decision. Stephen Fleming has been associated with the franchise since the start of the IPL in 2008 and took over as head coach in 2009. His report is renewed annually, and the report states that it is set to be extended once again this year. It is said that the decision also underlines the influence of MS Dhoni in CSK’s cricketing affairs. ‘That’s the management’s call’: Stephen Fleming on his future as CSK head coach | Cricket News

3 min readChennaiMay 19, 2026 08:48 AM IST As the five-wicket defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad pushed Chennai Super Kings to the brink, their hopes of qualification for the play-offs isn’t in their hands anymore. Should they fail to make it, it would be the third successive season that Chennai have failed to make the play-offs. With the pressure piling on head coach Stephen Fleming, the Kiwi has refused to confirm his continuity, revealing the decision would be taken by the management. Since arriving at the franchise as a player during the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008, Fleming took charge as the head coach in the 2009 and has since become the longest serving coach at any IPL franchise. With 5 titles and two Champions League titles, Fleming is the most decorated coach in IPL, but after another failed shot at making the play-offs, there has been growing displeasure among the CSK faithful. Those noises had reached Fleming which he acknowledged early in the season. And speaking shortly after their defeat to Hyderabad, Fleming …

McGrath, Gillespie and Fleming back BBL privatisation but warn Test cricket must be protected

3 min readMay 18, 2026 12:20 PM IST Three of Australia’s popular fast bowlers have backed BBL privatisation as inevitable but warned Cricket Australia that Test cricket must be ringfenced from the fallout, speaking on the Fast Bowling Cartel podcast on Monday. Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Damian Fleming addressed the ongoing standoff between Cricket Australia and several state associations, with NSW and Queensland having already rejected CA’s initial proposal to sell stakes in BBL franchises to private investors.Gillespie, who recently coached Hyderabad Kings in the PSL, identified the core risk plainly. “Let’s say an IPL franchise comes in and buys one of the Big Bash teams,” he said. “They’ve signed Travis Head to a multi-million dollar contract. They want him playing Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve – and this coincides with test cricket. Does this change what the Boxing Day test, the New Year’s test looks like? I think a lot of these questions are being asked right now.” McGrath echoed those concerns. “Test cricket’s the ultimate. We need to protect test cricket,” …
