The Chennai Super Kings have parted ways with head coach Stephen Fleming after a successful stint, bringing to a close the IPL’s most successful coaching era.
The franchise officially confirmed the news through social media, defining a benchmark in the tournament.
The decision was finalised following the discussions between the former New Zealand captain and Super Kings management. The announcement follows a disastrous campaign over the last three seasons, during which the franchise failed to finish in the top four.
This is also the case in the MLC, where Chennai’s sister franchise finished at the bottom of the MLC 2026 points table.
Stephen Fleming, who began with Chennai as a player during the tournament’s inaugural season in 2008, transitioned into the head coach role in 2009. Over the 17-year stint, Chennai Super Kings secured five IPL titles, two Champions League Twenty20 crowns and achieved a record 12 playoff appearances, alongside featuring in 10 finals.
The success was associated with the captain-coach relationship forged between Fleming and MS Dhoni. Backed by the team management, the duo cultivated a dressing-room culture out of pressure.
Speaking on the New Zealander’s departure, CSK owner Rupa Gurunath said, “Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise.”
“For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence. While our journey together on the field comes to a close, he will always remain an integral part of the team’s legacy.”
Meanwhile, CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan said, ” From the earliest days of this journey, Fleming helped define not just how we played, but what we wanted to be as a franchise. He built a culture rooted in consistency, humility, and putting the team first.”
Reflecting on his departure, Stephen Fleming said, “Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude.”
“My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved. Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever.”
With a major transition in the franchise, CSK will be aiming to appoint a new head coach to take on the franchise’s legacy.
