Bus collides with car amid thick fog in U.P., two dead

A bus collided head-on with a car amid dense fog in Amethi on Sunday (January 18, 2026), leaving two people dead and 10 others injured, police said. The accident occurred near Babu Ganj on the Raebareli-Sultanpur highway. According to police, the collision took place due to poor visibility caused by thick fog. The deceased were identified as Deepak Singh (45), a resident of Anni Baijal in Gauriganj, and Rituraj Yadav (35), a resident of Kaushambi. Both were travelling in the car and died on the spot. The injured were rushed to the district hospital in Gauriganj, where four were stated to be in a critical condition, police said. Station House Officer of Gauriganj police station, Shyam Narayan Pandey, said, “Four of the injured have suffered serious injuries, while the others sustained minor wounds. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and further investigation is underway”. Four men were killed, and one was injured after the car they were travelling in collided with a Punjab Roadways bus on the Hoshiarpur-Dasuya road here on Saturday ((January 10, 2026) morning, police said. “The accident occurred due to poor visibility caused by dense fog,” the police said. The deceased were identified as Sukhwinder, Sushil Kumar, Brij Kumar and Arun Kumar, all residents of the Chalet village in Himachal Pradesh. The injured, identified as Amit Kumar of the same village, was admitted to the Civil Hospital in Hoshiarpur for treatment. Station House Officer of Hariana Sub-inspector Kiran Singh said the five men were travelling to Amritsar airport. “As the car reached near Dosarka, the driver could not notice the bus due to dense fog, leading to the collision,” he said. The fog often forms inside polluted air near the ground and polluted events tend to last longer. Forecasters have been trying to understand the fog’s vertical structure, i.e. how thick the fog layer is, because thickness helps determine how long it will persist. New research from IIT-Madras has reported based on 15 years of CALIPSO satellite data that aerosol loading above fog over the Plain thickens fog layers. The top rises while the base stays near the ground, and droplets near the top become larger. The findings were published in Science Advances on January 9. The researchers created a number called AODFOG to estimate how much dust and smoke sat in the air above a layer.
