File Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Following the recent arrest of four youngsters for collecting hallucinogenic mushrooms from the reserve forests in The Nilgiris, the district police and the forest department are to conduct joint patrols in areas surrounding forest areas to prevent people from collecting the substances. According to police, Akash, a 20-year-old youth from Bombay Castle in The Nilgiris, as well as his friends from Coimbatore, Immanuel (19), Dhanush (21) and Harish (20), had trespassed into a reserve forest near Finger Post in Udhagamandalam and are said to have been collecting a species of mushroom known commonly as fly agaric, a known hallucinogenic mushroom that grows under particular species of trees following spells of heavy rain. Police said that in 2024, Akash and his girlfriend had consumed alcohol and the mushroom, leading to his girlfriend’s death. Police had arrested Akash and sent him to judicial custody. The adult male Indian gaur that was rescued after becoming trapped between two large water pipelines in Pune has now been successfully released into its natural habitat at the Bor Tiger Reserve in Wardha district in Maharashtra. The Pune Forest Division confirmed on Wednesday that the gaur was relocated after being declared medically fit following a detailed veterinary examination. The gaur became trapped between two Pune Municipal Corporation water pipelines along Canal Road near Sinhagad Road in Vishrantinagar on June 30. The rescue operation involved the Pune Forest Department, wildlife veterinarians, RESQ Charitable Trust, Pune Municipal Corporation, Pune Fire Brigade, Pune Police and local residents. Following several hours of coordinated efforts, the animal was safely rescued without suffering any major injuries. Veterinary examination confirms good health After the rescue, veterinarians carried out a comprehensive medical examination. The third railway line between the Jujharpur-Dhodramohar section falls on the Central Railway’s busy Itarsi-Nagpur route. The Central Railway proposal sought diversion of 8.0357 hectares of forest land, including in forest compartments in the wildlife corridor between Satpura and Melghat tiger reserves, as per minutes of the committee’s June 10 meeting and official proposal documents. The in-principle or Stage-I clearance was granted on the condition that final approval will be granted only after this railway line section, along with two others on the Itarsi-Nagpur route, gets wildlife clearance from the standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife. The deaths came to light on Thursday during a routine patrol by forest personnel in the Ghughri beat of the Vijayraghavgarh range. Officials found the carcasses of the animals scattered within a radius of around 100 metres of a pond in Reserve Forest compartment RF-62. The area was subsequently secured, and an investigation was launched. According to forest officials, a dog squad was pressed into service as part of efforts to trace those responsible. During the search, the dog squad led investigators to a house in Ghughri village. Forest officials said searches at the premises led to the recovery of fresh meat, bloodstains, animal hair, snares and other equipment suspected to have been used for hunting. PUNE: Extensive dumping of garbage, including large quantities of biomedical waste, across forested stretches of Katraj ghat has triggered environmental and public health concerns, prompting plans for a large-scale cleanup drive involving citizens, activists, civic authorities and the forest department. Mechanised cleaning operations in Katraj Ghat will begin on June 20, followed by citizen-driven cleanliness drive on June 21, wherein nearly 500 volunteers are expected to participate.
