After Sidra demolitions row, J&K minister tells forest officials: ‘First understand the law’ | India News

3 min readSrinagarMay 23, 2026 10:30 PM IST As the demolition of dwellings belonging to tribal people in Jammu’s Sidra snowballed into a major controversy, Jammu and Kashmir’s Forest and Ecology Minister Javed Rana on Saturday had some tough words for the bureaucracy. While chairing a meeting to review the implementation of the Forest Rights Act (FRA) in Jammu and Kashmir, Rana took a swipe at forest officials, telling them to “first understand” the law themselves. Rana told the meeting that he is concerned that some officials have an “inadequate understanding” of the Forest Rights Act and asked them to “develop a clearer and more comprehensive understanding” before implementing it. Commissioner Secretary Forests Sheetal Nanda, Secretary Tribal Affairs Prasana Ramaswamy and the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests were also present at the meeting. Sources said an angry Rana asked forest officials to read the judgments of the Supreme Court and the J&K High Court on the rights of forest dwellers. “The officials must possess thorough knowledge of the legal and humanitarian aspects of the legislation …

Hidden Maoist weapon-making setup unearthed and destroyed in Gadchiroli forest

Gadchiroli Police in Maharashtra have destroyed a Maoist arms-manufacturing unit and seized equipment and materials allegedly hidden underground in a forest area of the district during a special anti-Naxal operation, officials said on Friday. The operation was carried out based on confidential information received from surrendered Maoists during interrogation under Operation ‘Antim Prahar’. According to the police, Maoists used to secretly bury weapons, explosives, and related materials in forest areas to target security personnel during various Naxal observances, election periods, and other operations. Officials said the hidden stockpile was intended for use in sabotage activities against security forces. Police said Maoist influence in Gadchiroli district has significantly weakened and efforts are underway to trace and destroy materials concealed in forest areas. Officials said the surrendered Maoists, who laid down arms before the Gadchiroli Police on May 16, revealed during questioning that weapons manufacturing equipment and other materials had been hidden in the forest area under the Pomke Binagunda limits. Following the inputs, six joint teams of the Gadchiroli and Pranhita special operation squads along with …

Supreme Court declines to interfere with forest clearances for Adani’s Madhya Pradesh coal block project

The Supreme Court on Thursday (May 21, 2026) declined to interfere with the environmental clearances granted to the Adani Group’s coal block project in Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli district, pointing to the delay in challenging the approvals. A Bench comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe was hearing a plea filed by environmental activist Ajay Dubey challenging an April 22 order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had dismissed his plea against the May 2025 environmental clearance granted to Mahan Energen Ltd., a subsidiary of Adani Power, on the ground of limitation. Questioning the delay, the Bench orally observed, “Your original application itself was filed on January 22… why was there such a delay?” Under Section 16 of the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, challenges to orders passed by statutory authorities must ordinarily be filed within 30 days, with a further 60-day extension permissible upon sufficient cause being shown. ‘Serious environmental issue’ Appearing for Mr. Dubey, advocate Siddharth Gupta contended that the matter involved grave environmental concerns and that technical objections ought not to stand …

An artist’s impression of the proposed Gomti River Forest in Lucknow (HT Photo) The move is aimed at strengthening Lucknow’s shrinking green cover amid rapid urbanisation. The project is expected to become one of the largest green spaces in the state capital and is said to be only slightly smaller than Janeshwar Mishra Park in terms of area. The project has gained significance as Lucknow continues to witness large-scale infrastructure expansion and rising concerns over environmental degradation, increasing temperatures and declining green spaces. Officials believe the proposed Gomti River Forest could emerge as one of the city’s largest environmental assets and act as a natural green buffer in the future. Officials said the proposed forest will come up on the right of the Pipra Ghat area extending towards the Shaheed Path stretch. The project aims to create a large urban forest ecosystem with a wide range of plant …
