2 min readApr 4, 2026 03:23 PM IST Western Dedicated Freight Corridor completion: The Ministry of Railways has completed the entire Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). The 1,506-km-long WDFC runs from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) in Maharashtra to Dadri in Uttar Pradesh. The project has been developed in phases and executed by the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL). Western Dedicated Freight Corridor status In a statement, DFCCIL said that the successful trial run of freight trains marked the completion of the entire Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) on March 31, 2026, with operations conducted on the JNPT-New Saphale (Vaitarna) section. “A container train in the down direction (JNPT → New Saphale) departed at 11:50 hrs, hauled by an electric locomotive, while in the up direction (New Saphale → JNPT), a container train also departed at 11:50 hrs, powered by a diesel locomotive,” the DFCCIL said. Indian Railways crosses 1-billion-tonne freight loading, records over 3% year-on-year growth | India News

The Indian Railways has crossed 1,000 million tonnes or 1 billion tonnes freight loading during the current financial year 2025-26 (FY26) so far. According to official data, the total freight loading reached 1,020 million tonnes as of November 19, against over 1,600 million tonnes during the previous FY 2024-25, which was the all-time highest. The Railways has also registered a 3.11% increase in freight loading between April and October this FY compared to the same period last year, data showed, adding it loaded 935.1 million tonnes freight over these nine months — up from 906.9 million tonnes during the same period last year. Coal continues to be the largest contributor to the Railways’ freight loading at 505 million tonnes — accounting for over half of the total, followed by iron ore (115 million tonnes), cement (92 million tonnes), container traffic (59 million tonnes), steel (47 million tonnes), fertilisers (42 million tonnes), and foodgrains (30 million tonnes). New Delhi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday launched a new policy to rationalize freight charges for bulk cement transportation, and said it will bring down the cost of cement to benefit both the manufacturers as well as consumers. Vaishnaw said that the bulk cement transportation cost has been made uniform at a flat rate of 90 paisa per ton per km while removing the earlier system of calculating freight charges on the basis of distance and weight slabs. The new policy will also promote tank containers, a new type of wagons, in which bulk cement can be filled and transported to any location for consumption. “This new innovation will make environmentally clean transportation at a significantly reduced cost as cement bags will not be used,” the railway minister said. With work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project underway, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) on Wednesday said that a 70-metre-long steel bridge crossing over the tracks of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) on the outskirts of Vadodara is now complete. The steel bridge is the seventh to be completed in the Gujarat stretch of the high-speed rail corridor project. NHSRCL said that the launching of the bridge across two tracks of the freight corridor was completed on Tuesday, within 12 hours, with intermittent traffic blocks. The foundation stone of the unit at Dahod was laid in April 2022 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with an estimated cost of Rs 20,000 crore. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday said the electric locomotive manufacturing unit at Dahod in Gujarat will start producing a sufficient number of high-speed freight train engines in another three years.  India will export engines manufactured at Dahod unit, he added. Vaishnaw went to Dahod to review this yet-to-be fully functional manufacturing unit as well as the production status of the first 9000 horsepower (HP) engine from Dahod. The railway minister was on a day-long visit to Gujarat. He also inspected the engine and said it will be ready to serve the Indian Railways in another few months. From ticket reservation to freight enquiries, Indian Railways to launch super app for one-stop services | Business News

The Ministry of Railways has expedited the development of the super app to provide one-stop facilities related to Indian Railways and it may be released for the public soon, said a senior official. The official further said that in the first phase, the app will be offering services for reserved tickets, unreserved and platform tickets, train enquiries, PNR enquiry, allow ordering food on board, Rail Madad (a help and grievance platform) and freight-related enquiries. “Centre For Railway Information Systems (CRIS), on behalf of the Ministry of Railways, is developing a SuperApp to provide a single platform for all public-facing applications of Indian Railways. This app will combine the various services offered by Indian Railways, which are currently on disparate mobile apps, onto a single user interface and provides seamless navigation,” said the official quoted above. No casualty or damage to property has been reported, they said and added that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident that took place between 7.25 a.m. and 9 a.m. The 53-wagon train loaded with chip stones was on its way to Punjab from Jammu, the officials said. The train had stopped at the Kathua railway station in Jammu for a driver change and it seems that it began to roll down a slope gradient track on the Jammu-Jalandhar section, a spokesperson of the Northern Railway said, citing preliminary information. Both drivers – loco pilot and assistant loco pilot – were not on board the freight train, the officials said.
