FTII To Hold National Re-Exam For All Candidates After Delhi ‘Strong Room’ Breach Sparks Outrage

2 min readPuneMay 1, 2026 10:41 PM IST The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) will hold its entrance examination (written test) again for all candidates across all papers throughout the country. The entrance examination, conducted on April 26, was compromised after candidates breached the strong room at the examination centre in Delhi due to issues like delay in distribution of papers. The institute had appointed a three-member committee headed by the registrar to investigate how the entrance exam should be reconducted. In a notice, the registrar announced, “The decision of full re-examination at the national level is taken in order to ensure a uniform, fair, and credible assessment process and to provide a level playing field to all candidates in the wake of concerns regarding the overall perception of fairness and integrity of the examination process that arose in the light of some operational deficiencies and a major disruption in Delhi Centre which led to cancellation of exam at that centre.” The notice said candidates do not need to complete any formalities for …

Shadows of the Moonless Nights, a short film by a student of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), has been selected for La Cinef Competitive section of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. FTII student film goes to Cannes The 24-minute film, directed by Mehar Malhotra, is part of a lineup of 14 live-action and 5 animated shorts for the segment, which is dedicated to showcasing film school fiction and animated films. For this year’s edition, the organisers received 2,750 entries from film schools worldwide, the Cannes Film Festival said in a statement. The selected films are directed by 12 women and nine men and represent 15 countries and 4 continents, it added. Malhotra’s film will compete for three La Cinef prizes, which will be awarded by a jury during a ceremony on May 21 in the Bunuel Theatre. The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, has announced a five-day Film Appreciation Course in Lucknow from December 26 to 30. During the inauguration of the recently held Lucknow Short Film Festival, FTII Vice-Chancellor Dhiraj Singh had assured a strengthened FTII presence in Uttar Pradesh. According to the information released by the Press Information Bureau on Monday evening, the Vice-Chancellor said, “At the Lucknow Short Film Festival, the people of Lucknow demonstrated a clear understanding of and love for good cinema. Lucknow is an ideal place for FTII’s short courses. FTII, Pune and SRFTI, Kolkata, have been granted deemed-to-be university status under section 3 of the UGC Act. Read on to know more. New Delhi: Film and Television Institute of India, Pune and Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata, have officially been notified as Institutions Deemed to be Universities (Distinct Category) by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Now, this new status will allow both institutes to award degrees rather than just diplomas and also offer doctoral programmes.  “FTII Pune and SRFTI Kolkata, have been granted deemed-to-be university status under section 3 of the UGC Act. The status has been notified following a recommendation made by the University Grants Commission,” a senior MoE official said, reported PTI. “Both institutes will launch doctoral, research and innovative academic programmes. They will also participate in NIRF Rankings and integrate with Academic Bank of Credits (ABC). Aligned with vision of National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, this landmark decision will pave way for greater autonomy, innovation and academic excellence in film and media education,” the official added, reported PTI.
