Para swimmer Tejas Nandakumar’s Commonwealth Games dream ends due to classification rule

Para swimmer Tejas Nandakumar’s Commonwealth Games dream ends due to classification rule

His visa had arrived, accreditation for the Games was sorted, anti-doping formalities were complete, and even his measurements for the official Indian ceremonial kit were submitted. But despite ticking all the right boxes, para-swimmer Tejas Nandakumar will not be part of the Indian contingent at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games scheduled from July 23 to August 2. The 18-year-old from Bengaluru was set to compete in the men’s 50m freestyle S7 event before an email from the Commonwealth Games Federation to the Indian Olympic Association on June 23 changed everything. Tejas’ name was struck off during the final validation process after he was declared ineligible due to an international classification rule. “Following the IF validation process (post 23 June), the athlete has been identified as ineligible to represent your CGA in the Para Swimming competition of G2026,” an email read. According to the eligibility rules, all participating para athletes must either hold a Confirmed (C) international classification or a Review (R) status with a fixed review date of 2027 or later as of the sport entries …

India’s Wrestling legacy at the Commonwealth Games: A look back

India’s Wrestling legacy at the Commonwealth Games: A look back

For nearly a century, wrestling has been one of India’s most successful sports at the Commonwealth Games, producing champions, unforgettable moments and a steady stream of medals. The sport has contributed 114 medals to India’s overall Commonwealth Games tally, including 49 gold, 38 silver and 27 bronze medals, making it India’s most successful discipline at the Games. India also ranks second in the all-time Commonwealth Games wrestling medal table, behind only Canada. India’s Commonwealth Games wrestling story began in 1934 when Rashid Anwar won the country’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal with a bronze at the British Empire Games in London. Since then, generations of wrestlers have turned the event into one of India’s biggest medal-hunting grounds. However, that remarkable legacy will not continue at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The upcoming edition, scheduled from July 23 to August 2, will feature only 10 sports after organisers opted for a scaled-down programme, with wrestling among the disciplines dropped from the roster. As India prepares for a Commonwealth Games without one of its strongest sports, here’s a …

3 games, 18 runs, 13 balls, 2 sixes, 2 dismissals

2 min readUpdated: Jul 9, 2026 11:08 PM IST For the second time in two games, Jofra Archer got the better of his Rajasthan Royals teammate Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, dismissing the 15-year-old for a 10-ball 15 at Bristol. After scoring 27 runs in his first two T20I appearances for India, Sooryavanshi’s day ended in the third over of the fourth T20I when he holed out a delivery from Archer to Sam Curran at mid-on. After taking the Indian Premier League by storm in two seasons, Sooryavanshi had announced himself on the international stage by smashing Archer, England’s premier pacer, for a first-ball six on his T20I debut in Manchester. But after three games of the India vs England series that the Indian teenager has featured in, the personal scorecard of the Sooryavanshi vs Archer battle reads: 18 runs off 13 balls with two sixes from the Indian’s bat and two dismissals for Archer. After Archer had dismissed Sooryavanshi at Trent Bridge in a 125-rout of India, the pacer had been asked at the press conference about …

Tulika Maan rues cancelled foreign camp amid Judo Federation elections ahead of 2026 Commonwealth Games

The administrative chaos of Indian sports has again caught athletes in the crossfire ahead of the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Indian judo team was dealt a severe blow when its highly anticipated exposure camp in Japan was cancelled at the last minute following a leadership change in the Judo Federation of India. “There were elections in our federation, so we didn’t get the camps we wanted,” a disappointed Tulika Maan, who had won an unexpected silver medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games four years ago, told The Bridge on the sidelines of the official send-off ceremony in New Delhi. “The new body cancelled the earlier proposals, including our camp in Japan. We were fully prepared, and it got cancelled just ahead of a major event. We were left in complete shock,” she added. The cancellation was a massive setback for Maan, who competes in the women’s +78 kg heavyweight category. Indian combat sports have traditionally lacked depth in the heavier weight classes, leaving the 27-year-old with a severe deficit of quality sparring …
