Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Monday vacated the Budgam assembly seat, one of the two seats from where he was elected. He has retained the Ganderbal constituency, PTI reported. He defeated PDP’s Bashir Ahmed Mir by 10,574 votes.  Omar Abdullah was an MLA from Ganderbal from 2009 to 2014 during his first stint as chief minister. Srinagar: A doctor and five construction workers were killed when terrorists opened fire at a construction site at Gagangir in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, official sources said Sunday. The number of casualties can go up, sources said. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called the attack on non-local labourers “dastardly and cowardly”. “The casualty figure from the Gagangir attack is not final as there are a number of injured labourers, both local & non-local. Praying that the injured make a full recovery as the more seriously injured are being referred to SKIMS, Srinagar,” Mr Abdullah posted on X. Image Source : PTI Representative Image A tragic terrorist attack on Sunday evening near a campsite of the Z-mode tunnel at Gagangeer in the Gund area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district resulted in the deaths of six non-local labourers and a doctor, with five others suffering serious injuries and being transferred to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS). Police officials reported that terrorists opened fire on the labourers’ camp, which housed workers from a private company involved in the tunnel construction. The assault was both swift and deadly, causing immediate fatalities and injuries among the labourers. The deceased have been identified as Dr Shahnawaz, Faheem Nazir, Kaleem, Mohammad Hanif, Shashi Abrol, Anil Shukla and Gurmeet Singh. In response to the attack, police and security forces rapidly mobilised to the area to apprehend the assailants and secure the location. Investigations are currently underway to identify the perpetrators and understand the motives behind this violent act.
