BJP scared, says Cong after revocation of go-ahead for Rahul Gandhi’s Dehradun event

The Congress on Wednesday attacked Uttarakhand’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over the revocation of the permission for Rahul Gandhi’s “Chhatro Ki Goonj” programme at Dehradun’s Parade Ground, saying it is afraid of the Leader of the Opposition in the Sabha. The Dehradun district administration offered an alternative venue for the programme as part of a nationwide campaign against paper leaks, examination irregularities, cancelled tests, re-examinations, and rising educational costs. Rahul Gandhi’s “Chhatro Ki Goonj” programme was scheduled at Dehradun’s Parade Ground on Friday. (X) State Congress chief Ganesh Godiyal said the cancellation of permission for the event at Parade Ground exposed the BJP government’s anti-student and undemocratic face. “The BJP government is scared of Rahul Gandhi’s growing popularity and the increasingly vocal youth. But the youth of Uttarakhand will continue to raise questions on education, employment, transparency and their future,” Godiyal said. The Congress organised a march to Parade Ground to protest the decision. The protest led to a brief clash with the police. Dehradun district magistrate Ashish Chauhan said the Congress sought permission …

‘Tweet on Rafah, silent on Hindus in Dhaka’: BJP slams Sonia Gandhi’s Gaza article

The BJP on Saturday hit out at Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi over her article criticising the Centre’s “silence” over Gaza. In her criticism of the Modi government, Sonia argued that India’s response to the Gaza conflict was against both its “morality” and “national interest.” (AICC/ ANI) BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused Sonia of reducing India’s foreign policy to “vote bank Niti,” and defended the union government, saying India today maintains ties with both Israel and Palestine. “Those who are penning articles on Gaza, tweet on Rafah, carry the bags, are silent eloquently on Hindus in Dhaka. It shows that even Videsh Niti becomes the subject of vote bank Niti,” Poonawalla said. He added, “They are eulogising Hamas, but they have not a word to offer on the deadly terror strikes in Israel…. For years, no relations were maintained with Israel out of vote bank considerations.” ‘Policy of multi-alignment’ Poonawalla said that currently, India had maintained good relations with Israel and Palestine, while highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi receiving Palestine’s highest civilian …

High court cites Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of prohibition, cancels liquor bar licence | Legal News

Invoking Mahatma Gandhi‘s vision of total prohibition, the Madras High Court has cancelled a liquor bar licence granted to a recreation club in Tamil Nadu‘s Karaikudi in proximity of a temple, a church and a university, holding that authorities failed to comply with mandatory legal safeguards and adequately assess public interest before permitting the sale of liquor. The licence had been challenged by local residents who alleged that the proposed bar was located close to a temple, church, hospitals and educational institutions, and the court noted that the establishment was forced to shut within two days of opening following sustained public protests. A bench of Justices N Sathish Kumar and M Jothiraman was hearing two public interest litigations (PILs) challenging an FL2 licence granted by the commissioner of prohibition and excise department to ‘Santhosam Recreation Club’ on November 12, 2025. The petitioners sought cancellation of the licence, alleging violations of statutory rules governing liquor establishments and questioning the suitability of the location. “It is pertinent to mention that Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi tried …

From the Urdu Press: ‘Behind Shivakumar’s elevation, Rahul Gandhi’s new politics’; ‘BJP top brass must defuse Bengal storm’ | Political Pulse News

From politics to education, the changing of the guard in the Congress government in Karnataka to the NEET-CBSE rows and youth protests — the Urdu dailies covered multiple grounds over the week, spotlighting the concerns and anguish of millions of young students and their families. The dailies also kept the focus on the fraught political situation in West Bengal turning more volatile in the first month of the first-ever BJP government. Referring to Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s elevation as a successor to CM Siddaramaiah, the New Delhi edition of Inquilab, in its May 31 editorial, says the development indicated that the Congress high command was no longer in a mood to let itself be held hostage to the intra-party power struggle and factional feuds in the state. “The Congress leadership seems to have learnt an essential lesson by its failures to tackle similar tussles in some other states in the past, such as between Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot in Rajasthan, or between Bhupesh Baghel and T S Singh Deo in Chhattisgarh, …

From corridors of power: Sunil Jakhar’s tragedy, CM Mann’s walk that never was and Rahul Gandhi’s ‘third warning’ | Chandigarh News

4 min readMay 31, 2026 04:35 PM IST If Punjab politics ever institutes a lifetime achievement award for being almost there, Sunil Jakhar would be a unanimous choice. The latest chapter came last week when the BJP replaced him as its Punjab president with Kewal Dhillon. For Jakhar watchers, it was deja vu. In the Congress, he was replaced as Leader of Opposition by Charanjit Singh Channi. Later, when he was heading the Punjab Congress, the party brought in Navjot Singh Sidhu as PPCC chief. Then came the biggest heartbreak of all. When Captain Amarinder Singh was shown the door in September 2021, Jakhar seemed destined for the Chief Minister’s chair. Then came the famous argument that Punjab needed a Sikh Chief Minister, and Channi took oath while Jakhar watched history unfold from the front row. Politics, they say, is about timing. Jakhar’s problem is that every time the music stops, there is always one more chair available, and each time for someone else. The tragedy is not that he never reached the top. It is …
