Grid strains to meet peak daytime power demand; government says conserve | Business News

The country’s power grid struggled to fully meet peak daytime electricity demand for the first time during this summer, prompting the government on Friday to urge citizens to use electricity “wisely and judiciously”. The appeal comes amid reports of power cuts from several parts of the country as India recorded a peak daytime shortage of 188 megawatts (MW) for the first time this summer when electricity demand touched a record 270 gigawatts (GW) on Thursday, according to data from the Grid Controller of India (Grid India). The shortfall was roughly equivalent to the peak electricity demand of a state like Manipur.  But any slight mismatch in demand and supply can cause extreme strain on the system, leading to fluctuation in grid frequency and can risk grid stability. Power cuts usually occur when demand exceeds supply of electricity and grid operators resort to load shedding. Peak demand figures, whether daily or monthly, are largely statistical reference points, as they reflect the highest load recorded at any moment during a given period on a particular day, often …

Amid record demand surge, why India’s power grid faces night peak stress due to outages as spot electricity prices spike | Explained News

As soaring temperatures push India’s peak power consumption to record highs, the stress on the grid is becoming most pronounced at night, when nearly 150 GW (giga watt, or 1000 mega watts) of solar capacity goes offline after sundown. Data from the Grid Controller of India (Grid India) shows that there has been a shortage in meeting peak demand the past few days during non-solar hours, which typically refers to the period between 6 PM and 6 AM, when solar generation is not available. During this period, the system usually relies on conventional sources such as coal, gas, hydro, nuclear and wind to meet demand. Peak demand figures, whether daily or monthly, are largely statistical reference points, as they reflect the highest load recorded at any moment during a given period on a particular day, often for a brief duration. On Saturday — when the peak demand surged to record high of 256 GW — there was a peak shortfall of around 4.2 GW at 10:39 PM, Grid India data shows. A day earlier, on …

Economic Survey warns of cost, grid as key challenges for renewable energy

Economic Survey warns of cost, grid as key challenges for renewable energy

India must address challenges such as high capital costs, delays in land acquisition and grid availability issues to sustain its rapid renewable energy growth, the Economic Survey 2025-2026, tabled in the Parliament on Thursday said. The Economic Survey, tabled days before the Union Budget 2026, noted that the hurdles can be tackled through appropriate policy instruments, including innovative financing mechanisms and optimised project execution. According to the survey, India’s energy sector is undergoing a major structural transformation. The country has emerged as a global leader in renewable energy, ranking third worldwide in overall renewable energy capacity and installed solar capacity, and fourth in installed wind capacity. India has already surpassed its target of 50 per cent installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, reaching 51.93 per cent by the end of December 2025. This achievement has been driven by record annual additions to renewable energy capacity. Strong capacity additions in 2025-26 During 2025-26 (up to 31 December 2025), India added a total of 38.61 GW of renewable energy capacity. This includes 30.16 GW of solar …

SSLC results: Kalyana Karnataka districts continue to maintain bottom rungs in ranking grid

Once again, the seven districts of Kalyana Karnataka recorded a disappointing performance in the SSLC examination, occupying the lowest ranks on the State’s results grid. Of the bottom seven districts, six belong to the Kalyana Karnataka region, while the seventh, Vijayapura, from the Kitturu Karnataka region, ranked 34th, just one place above the last. Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Madhu Bangarappa, announced the SSLC results in Bengaluru on Friday. Kalaburagi district, regarded as an educational hub in the region with several reputed institutions, has slipped to the bottom—35th rank—with a pass percentage of just 42.43%, far below the state average of 66.14% and significantly behind Dakshina Kannada, which topped the list with 91.12%. Kalaburagi’s decline has been consistent over the past three years, dropping from 29th place in 2023 to 34th in 2024, and now 35th in 2025. Following Kalaburagi, Vijayapura ranked 34th with a pass percentage of 49.58%, Yadgir 33rd with 51.60%, Raichur 32nd with 52.05%, Bidar 31st with 53.25%, Koppal 30th with 57.32%, and Ballari 29th with 60.26%. An iPhone owner’s guide to living off the app grid

An iPhone owner’s guide to living off the app grid

The grid is a comfortable place to live. The app grid, I mean: the rows and rows of app icons on your iPhone’s homescreen. It’s familiar. Safe. It’s how I’ve lived with my various phones over the past decade. But at some point, it started to feel oppressive. All those icons staring at me in the face, vying for my attention. The clutter! The distracting little notification badges! The grid was a reasonable way to organize apps when I had like, ten of them. There are sixty on the iPhone I’m using now, and I set it up from scratch a few months ago.  Naturally, living off-grid or in a non-traditional homescreen arrangement has been possible for much longer on Android. Google’s OS lets you keep your screen clear and just find your apps in the app drawer, which is always a swipe away. You can even replace the launcher entirely. But iOS — where every new app you download winds up on your homescreen by default — hasn’t exactly made it easy to abandon …
