Bhatti Vikramarka has stated that the 5×800 megawatt Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS), a super-critical generation facility, would be completed in all respects by May 2025 to contribute 4,000 MW power to meet the State’s growing energy needs. Mr. Vikramarka, along with Ministers N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, visited YTPS and inspected the ongoing works on Sunday. Earlier, they flagged off the train carrying coal from Ramagundam to the power plant at the YTPS take-off point at Dameracherla. Later, Mr. Vikramarka switched on the link to transmit power generated in the stage one of YTPS to the grid and reviewed the progress of YTPS works with the project engineers and Energy department officials. A powerful solar storm is predicted to reach Earth on Thursday, 10th October, according to forecasters from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The storm could generate stunning auroras and affect radio communications, power grids, and satellites. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Centre (SWPC) has issued a G4-class geomagnetic storm warning, the second-highest level on their scale. A similar storm was last seen in May of this year, causing dramatic auroral displays. The solar flare and its consequences This event stems from a massive solar flare, classified as X1.8, which erupted from the sun on the night of 8th October. The flare was accompanied by a coronal mass ejection (CME), which is now speeding towards Earth. Shawn Dahl, service coordinator at SWPC, explained that the impact could vary depending on how the CME’s magnetic field aligns with Earth’s. European Union countries will ask Brussels to find ways to increase funding for power grids, as concerns mount that ageing electricity infrastructure could hamper Europe’s green goals, a draft document showed. Europe’s plans to shift to clean energy will require a huge expansion of power grids, transforming the network to connect consumers to massive new offshore wind farms, fleets of local solar panels, and install millions of charging stations for electric vehicles. EU countries will ask the European Commission to assess how current EU funds available for power grids compared with the – far bigger – actual investment needs, and produce guidance on how to use more EU funds for grid projects, according to draft conclusions for a meeting of EU energy ministers on May 30. The conclusions, seen by Reuters, said the Commission should then “look for ways to increase overall financing for electricity grid infrastructure”. Kolkata residents are cranking up their air conditioners (ACs) to beat the scorching summer heat. But with many doing so without proper authorisation, it is causing a heavy strain on the city’s power grid, leading authorities to issue an appeal: Take sanction first and then use your new AC. Data from sources in the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) reveals that between March 1 and April 15, Kolkata’s primary power supplier has only received 34,850 applications for new AC connections. On the contrary, estimates suggest that a staggering 1.5 lakh ACs were purchased during this period – this translates to 80 per cent of ACs being used without official sanction. This unauthorised use of ACs is wreaking havoc on Kolkata’s power grid, leading to frequent fluctuations. The situation has now prompted the state power minister Aroop Biswas to call an urgent meeting to address the issue and find solutions to ensure a stable electricity supply in Kolkata.
