The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has strongly criticised Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan and demanded his immediate removal from the state Cabinet and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reported IANS. The Congress has accused Mahajan of making “anti-national” remarks and of insulting the Indian Armed Forces during a recent visit to Punjab. What triggered the controversy? The issue began after Mahajan attended the 42nd anniversary event of Operation Blue Star on June 6 at the Damdami Taksal headquarters in Chowk Mehta, Amritsar. He attended the event as a representative of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. During the event, Mahajan referred to June 6 as a “kaala din” (black day) and strongly criticised the 1984 military operation carried out at the Golden Temple. He also criticised then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for ordering the Army action, as per the news agency reports. Maharashtra Congress set to overhaul organisation in ‘Sangathan Srujan Abhiyan’

File | Photo Credit: PTI The Maharashtra Congress is set to begin overhaul of its organisational at the grassroot level through its Sangathan Srujan Abhiyan amid criticism among workers over the lack of party organisation and dominance of repeat faces.  The change will include the first-ever selection of the taluka (block) president. As part of the exercise, the party is finalising the list of 72 district presidents across the State, and in a departure from past practices, the campaign will also include appointments at the taluka level, covering 675 talukas. Selecting taluka level president is an initiative of State unit chief Harshwardhan Sapkal. Under the new model, taluka Congress presidents will be appointed along with heads of ten frontal organisations and departments at each taluka, including Youth Congress, NSUI, Mahila Congress and Seva Dal, as well as representatives from OBC, SC, ST, VJNT, minority and social media wings. Congress leader Harshwardhan Sapkal’s remarks ‘equating’ Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with Tipu Sultan have sparked a political row in Maharashtra. Pune city Congress chief Arvind Shinde said the party had submitted a written complaint against BJP functionaries. (PTI) In the aftermath of the outrage, BJP and Congress workers clashed in Pune, with stone pelting also reported. The incident, which took place near the Congress Bhawan, the party’s headquarters in Pune, led to nine persons sustaining injuries. Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma told PTI news agency that a protest was held near the Congress Bhavan, during which there was sloganeering from workers of BJP and Congress. “Workers of both parties climbed onto walls and there was stone pelting from both sides. Cases are being registered against workers of both sides,” Sharma said. File. | Photo Credit: PTI Alleging irregularities in the draft voters’ list, the Congress on Tuesday (November 25, 2025) demanded that the Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) extend the deadline to submit objections and suggestions by 15 days. In a letter to the SEC, signed by State Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal, leaders Vijay Wadettiwar and Satej Patil, the party said the draft voters list was published on November 20. The SEC also gave a deadline till November 27 to submit objections and suggestions. “Many voters are not in the draft list of wards they reside in and the situation is different in all municipal corporations of the State. This is a large number,” the letter said. “Even the process of taking objections in the electoral rolls is very complicated and every person who has an issue with the voters’ list has to make an application about their grievance,” it said. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge appointed Sapkal as the President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect.
