HSC board exam paper leak: Maharashtra forms SIT to probe case

Maharashtra Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the suspected HSC board exam paper leak. As reported by PTI, the six-member SIT will trace the source of the leaked papers and identify all persons involved. The matter surfaced on February 18 during the chemistry exam at St Ursula High School in Nagpur when a supervisor found the question paper on a student`s mobile phone before the start of the exam. The chemistry and physics question papers of Maharashtra board’s class 12 exam were reportedly leaked. In regard to the paper leak, police have so far arrested four accused, including coaching institute operators. 3 min readPuneFeb 12, 2026 10:10 PM IST The first day of the Maharashtra Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) board examinations on February 10 saw two cases of mass copying – one each in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Beed districts. While an FIR was filed in the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar case on the same day, the FIR in Beed was registered on February 11. In total, the English paper conducted on the first day saw 42 cases of malpractice reported across the state. No cases of mass copying were recorded on the second and third days of the examinations, authorities said. In the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar case, the FIR was filed against 24 people under sections of The Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices at University, Board and Other Specified Examinations Act, 1982 and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 3(5). According to the FIR lodged by the Block Education Officer, the mass copying incident was detected at Rashtriya Higher Secondary School in Jaitapur village of Kannad taluka. As many as six teachers who were serving as invigilators at Class 12 exam centres in Jalna district were suspended after some students were found copying during the ongoing Maharashtra HSC board exams, officials said. Action has been taken against six teachers after students were found copying during the English exam, they said. The incident occurred on Tuesday during the English examination conducted by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education in Ambad tehsil, reported the PTI. Education Officer (Secondary) Balu Kharat said the flying squad carried out a surprise inspection at exam centres in Rohilagad, Ankushnagar and Shahgad. During the inspection, several students were found copying. The squad took immediate action against the students involved. Officials said that all six teachers belonged to different educational institutions. Kharat instructed their institutions to suspend them for dereliction of duty during the examination. He added that action was also initiated against the teachers due to negligence in supervising the students. Forty-two malpractice cases were reported across Maharashtra during the Std XII English board examination held on Tuesday, February 10. The incidents occurred during the morning session across several divisions, according to the State Education Board. Amravati recorded the highest number, 22, followed by Pune, 10. Nashik reported four cases, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar three, Latur two, and Nagpur one. No cases were reported from the Mumbai, Kolhapur and Konkan divisions, indicating strict supervision and effective vigilance, officials said. State board officials said district-level vigilance committees were monitoring exam centres and warned of strict action, including cancellation of centre recognition, against those found encouraging or indulging in malpractice. The Board has urged students, parents, and schools to cooperate and maintain the integrity of the examination process. Mumbai division breaks low-performance streak, ranks third in HSC results | Mumbai News

After three consecutive years of recording the lowest pass percentage among all nine divisions of the Maharashtra State Board, the Mumbai division has made a turnaround in the HSC results this year. With a pass percentage of 92.93%, Mumbai has climbed to the third position among the nine divisions in the state, following Konkan (96.74%) and Kolhapur (93.64%). This marks a leap from last year’s 91.95% and an improvement over previous years, with 88.13% in 2023 and 90.91% in 2022. The division—which encompasses Mumbai city, suburbs, Thane, Raigad and Palghar—saw 2,91,955 out of 3,14,114 appearing students successfully passing the exam. “From having ranked lowest to now being ranked third among total nine divisions, it is a great improvement for Mumbai division which covers a large area,” said an official from Mumbai division of Maharashtra State Board.
