The incident occurred on Friday evening when a team from the 202nd battalion of CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action, an elite unit of Central Reserve Police Force) was out on an area domination operation. Security forces in Chhattisgarh Saturday detected a heavy improvised explosive device (IED) weighing nearly 50 kg in Bijapur – the state’s most Maoist-affected district. The incident took place on the Basaguda-Awapalli road, which falls under jurisdiction of the Basaguda police station. A battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) detected the IED under a concrete bridge during demining operations, prompting the force’s bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) team to defuse it. According to Bijapur’s Additional Superintendent of Police Chandrakant Governa, Maoists had hidden a command IED – a device that can be manually triggered from 100-200 metres away – behind a concrete block and some stones. An IED planted by Naxals, was defused by security officials in Bijapur. The remote-controlled IED under a culvert near Timapur Durga temple on Basaguda-Awapalli Road was detected by the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) of the 168th battalion of the CRPF when it was out on de-mining exercise, an official said. The Naxalites had removed some stones and cement to create a cavity for the IED which was then covered with stones, he said. But the metal detector found it, the police official added. The BDS first tried to remove it safely, but since the IED was planted deep under the surface, it was neutralised through a controlled explosion, he said. The incident occurred in the early hours in Basaguda police station area when a joint team of security forces was out on an area domination operation, a senior police official said. Personnel belonging to the 229th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and 206th battalion of CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action), an elite jungle warfare unit of CRPF, were involved in the operation, he said. As per preliminary information, the personnel inadvertently came in contact with the pressure IED, triggering the blast and causing injuries to two of them, the official said.
