As a part of it, a seawall will be constructed there under the expert guidance of IIT-Madras, which will prepare the DPR and also monitor the project implementation, which is scheduled to commence in November. The Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) has launched a programme to curb accidents across the country. The programme, under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, prioritises high accident-burden zones in 100 districts through an analysis of data of accidents in 17 States. Launched in Delhi on Tuesday, the data-driven hyperlocal intervention approach is tailored to the local needs of each district and aligned with the CoERS’s 5E model of road safety – engineering, enforcement, education, emergency care, and empathy. The MoRTH’s “Road Accidents in India 2022” report states 4,61,312 accidents were reported, resulting in 1,68,491 fatalities and 4,43,366 injuries. While many of these accidents were attributed to human error, a significant proportion is due to localised challenges. IIT-Madras ties up with Energy Systems Catapult UK

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has partnered with Energy Systems Catapult UK to work on net zero innovation and sustainability. The partnership will open opportunities for knowledge exchange, applied research and commercialisation of clean energy technologies.  ESC is a UK-government backed innovation centre launched in 2015 and is part of a network of nine technology and innovation centres established by Innovate UK. Catapult Network fosters collaborations between industry, government, research organisations and academia to transform ideas into valuable products and services. Manu Santhanam, Dean, ICSR, Satya Seshadri, faculty head and Nikhil Tambe, chief executive officer, the Energy Consortium, represented the institute while Brendan O’Neill, advisor, innovator support and international, represented Energy Systems Catapult UK and Babita Sharma, senior net zero advisor, British High Commission, were present.  The collaboration aims to facilitate joint innovation programmes in renewable energy, smart grids, energy storage, electric mobility, green hydrogen, green ports and maritime. IIT-Madras builds Asia’s largest shallow wave basin

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) has commissioned Asia’s largest shallow wave basin research facility to cater to research and industry requirements. The indigenously developed facility is located at Discovery — IIT-M’s satellite campus in Thaiyur, which is in the city’s suburb. The multidirectional shallow wave basin can handle complex wave and current interaction, addressing problems faced by Indian ports, waterways and coastal engineering issues.    The National Technology Centre for Ports Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC) has established the facility. The technology arm of the Shipping Ministry, which offers technological support to ports, Inland Waterways Authority of India and other institutions.  IIT-Madras Ocean Engineering department professor K. The number of incubators in the Indian ecosystem has grown steadily, with more than 1,100 active incubators dotting the Indian startup ecosystem, reveals a report jointly presented by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore‘s NSRCEL, startup incubator of the management institute. The Southern region leads the pack, housing 45 per cent of all incubators and having the highest density of incubators. The report titled, ‘India Incubator Kaleidoscope 2024’ shows that tier 1 cities house almost half of all incubators that is 48 per cent. Chennai has a high proportion of academic incubators at 82 per cent, whereas Bengaluru and Gurugram have a high proportion of industry incubators at 71 per cent and 84 per cent, respectively. The incubator density is 0.8 incubators per million population according to the report, whereas countries like US, UK and China range between 8 and 10 incubators per million population. IIT-Madras raises ₹513 crore from alumni, other donors in FY24

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras raised ₹513 crore in funding from its alumni, companies and individual donors in the financial year 2023-24, more than doubling it from ₹218 crore it had netted in the year before. In a statement on Tuesday, the institute said it has also received total new pledges of ₹717 crore from alumni and corporate partners in the financial year ended 31 March, 2024. “The funds received would be used for technology research and development as well as for deploying technology already built by IIT Madras, in various parts of the country based on the societal needs. In addition, it is also used to support deserving students with scholarships as well as to support the growing infrastructural needs of the institute,” said the college. The number of donors giving over ₹1 crore to the institute was 48 (16 alumni donors and 32 corporate partners). The metaverse market, that is expected to grow at an annual rate of 37.7 percent in the next six years, is estimated to reach the valuation of $74.4 billion (roughly Rs. 6,20,918 crore) by the end of 2024. Gearing up to withstand the force of advancements in Web3, IIT Madras has begun drafting policies to oversee the metaverse sector. Called the XTIC (the eXperiential Technology Innovation Centre), a research and development body incubated by the IIT-M, has begun work around something called the ‘Metaverse India Policy and Standards (MIPS)’. The XTIC has established a dedicated committee to conduct research around the predictable use cases and loopholes in the current metaverse ecosystem. The committee will address the technical and ethical shortcomings to make the industrial use of this digital technology safer and more advanced. Rrahul Sethi, a veteran from India’s tech space who recently launched a metaverse experience centre in NCR’s Noida, is part of this committee. Students from all streams can apply for BS Data Science | Photo Credit: FILE PHOTO   The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has called for applications for the next batch of BS degree in Data Science and Applications, and Electronic Systems Courses.   The four-year programme, which is open to all irrespective of age and background, allows students to pursue degree programmes along with their regular degrees and offers up to 75% scholarships to economically disadvantaged learners.   Currently over 25,000 students, including working professionals and college students, are enrolled in the programme from across the country.  The last date to apply for the upcoming batch is May 26.
