Houselisting Phase Of Census 2027 To Begin From April 1, Centre Notifies | India News

(File image) Census 2027: The Union Government on Wednesday issued a gazette notification for the houselisting phase of the Census. As per the government, the Census, notified in the Gazette dated June 16, 2025, will be conducted in two phases. State/UT Governments will carry out the House Listing and Housing Census from April 1, 2026, to September 30, 2026, with self-enumeration for 15 days prior to house-to-house visits in a period of 30 days. It is the first phase of the Census to record details about houses & basic amenities but not the persons. The second phase, Population Enumeration (PE), will be held in February 2027. File | Photo Credit: The Hindu The decennial census exercise has been postponed till September, at least, as the government informed States that the date of freezing of administrative boundaries has been extended till June 30. As per norms, census can be conducted only three months after freezing of boundary limits of administrative units such as districts, sub-districts, tehsils, talukas and police stations. The finalisation of boundaries of administrative units entails covering all jurisdictional changes between two consecutive censuses. The last census was held in 2011. Explained | Impact of delay in Census The general elections are expected to be held in March-April 2024 and the completion of both the phases of census will take at least 11 months, even if done at accelerated pace from October, there by ruling out the possibility of census happening anytime in 2023 and early 2024.
