(File image) Census 2027: The Union Government on Wednesday issued a gazette notification for the houselisting phase of the Census. As per the government, the Census, notified in the Gazette dated June 16, 2025, will be conducted in two phases. State/UT Governments will carry out the House Listing and Housing Census from April 1, 2026, to September 30, 2026, with self-enumeration for 15 days prior to house-to-house visits in a period of 30 days. It is the first phase of the Census to record details about houses & basic amenities but not the persons. The second phase, Population Enumeration (PE), will be held in February 2027. As per norms, census can be conducted only three months after freezing of boundary limits of administrative units such as districts, sub-districts, tehsils, talukas and police stations. The finalisation of boundaries of administrative units entails covering all jurisdictional changes between two consecutive censuses. The last census was held in 2011.
