The two countries have also signed the Double Contributions Convention (DCC), which will ensure that temporary workers do not have to pay social security contributions in both countries simultaneously. The official said the DCC is also likely to be implemented in parallel with the trade agreement. Before the agreement comes into force, it needs approval from the UK Parliament. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the pact would set a new benchmark for “equitable and ambitious trade between the two large economies”. Though the fineprint has not yet been made public, domestic industry has welcomed the announcement, amid concerns about the potential impact on agriculture and medium and small enterprises (MSMEs). The deal is likely to be signed after three months, and will take over a year to implement. Why is the deal significant for both nations? The U.K. is India’s 16th largest trading partner and India is the U.K.’s 11th largest partner. Their bilateral trade is about $60 billion with India enjoying a positive trade balance, which is expected to double by 2030, according to the Indian government’s estimates. The official clarified that India has not included a Minimum Import Price (MIP) provision for British alcoholic beverages in the free trade agreement, despite requests from domestic liquor manufacturers. This is significant as India plans to reduce import duties on UK whisky and gin from 150 per cent to 75 per cent, and further to 40 per cent by the tenth year of the deal. On automobiles, the official clarified that India has incorporated adequate safeguards in the agreement to protect sensitive sectors.
