BJP delegation meets Delhi poll body chief, demands verification of voters in burqa and face masks | Delhi News

A delegation of the Delhi BJP on Wednesday met the Chief Electoral officer (CEO) here demanding proper verification of women voters wearing ‘burqa’ or face masks with the help of female officials during May 25 polling. It said that the step would prevent “anti-social and anti-democratic elements” from “rigging” the election on seven Lok Sabha seats in the national capital. The demand comes amid a recent controversy over BJP candidate from Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat Madhavi Latha being booked by election authorities for allegedly making ‘burqa’ clad voters show their faces for verification. The Delhi BJP delegation handed over a memorandum to Delhi CEO, for verification of ‘burqa’ clad women voters on the day of polling on May 25. “Those who come to vote wearing burqa or face masks should be allowed to vote only after thorough verification through female officials,” demanded the delegation that included BJP MLAs Ajay Mahawar and Mohan Singh Bisht, state secretary Kishan Sharma and lawyer Neeraj Gupta. Mahawar said that steps should be taken to ensure there is no fake …

CM Kejriwal in Lucknow today, to address joint presser with SP chief Akhilesh | Delhi News

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court to campaign for Lok Sabha elections, will address a joint press conference with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow on Thursday. Kejriwal was earlier scheduled to be part of the joint conference held by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Yadav in Lucknow Wednesday but, party officials said, he had to back out because he was scheduled to lead a roadshow in two constituencies in Delhi, where Congress has its candidate under the INDIA bloc. Kejriwal is yet to share the stage with any senior Congress leader in the run up to the polls. While AAP leaders said the plan had to be changed at the last minute because Kejriwal is trying to address as many rallies and roadshows in Delhi as he can before he starts a hectic campaign in Punjab, sources said that Congress leaders at the national level and the AAP leadership have their doubts about sharing stage when they are not in an alliance in Punjab. While …

Days after Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal alleged, in a call to the Police Control Room, that she was assaulted by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s aide Bibhav Kumar, BJP leaders tried to corner the Aam Aadmi Party over the issue, holding a protest near the CM House in Civil Lines and also raising slogans at a roadshow Kejriwal held in Chandni Chowk and North West Delhi. AAP’s Sanjay Singh, who Tuesday said that the CM had directed strict action against Kumar for misbehaving with Maliwal, met her on Wednesday. Both Maliwal and Singh could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. According to sources, it was Singh who first called Maliwal on Monday after news of her being allegedly assaulted first came out, and is believed to have spoken to her regarding action against Kumar. Maliwal has not filed a formal complaint with the police about the incident yet. At a press conference, BJP national spokesperson Shazia Ilmi, who was previously with AAP, expressed concern over Maliwal’s safety and wondered if she was being intimidated. …

Beseeching votes as an answer to the ruling dispensation for jailing her husband and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Sunita Kejriwal on Thursday accompanied AAP MLA and Bharuch candidate Chaitar Vasava, as he held a roadshow in his Assembly constituency of Dediapada. Vasava, who had spent 48 days in jail in a case of assault of forest officials and stayed away from Dediapada for four months after he was booked, was accompanied by his wives Shakuntala and Varsha in the roadshow. Perched around a Birsa Munda statue at a traffic island, Sunita took to reminding several hundreds who had gathered that the “unjust and wrongful jailing of Vasava” and Shakuntala – from December 2023 till February this year – is similar to her husband’s and is a “sign of dictatorship”. Sunita, a star campaigner for AAP, accompanied the party’s two candidates from Gujarat – Bhavnagar candidate Umesh Makwana in Botad and Vasava in Dediapada – in a tightly wound day-long schedule of campaigning with roadshows held in both constituencies. Both Makwana and Vasava are sitting …

Accusing the AAP-Delhi government of being anti-Dalit, former Delhi Social Welfare Minister Raaj Kumar Anand Thursday called on L-G VK Saxena with a memorandum asking for his intervention in addressing “critical issues” concerning the welfare of the “poorest of the poor” in the city. The AAP government did not offer a comment on Anand’s allegations. The former Minister for Labour, Social Welfare and SC/ST/OBC, Anand underlined that he had resigned in the wake of “prevalent excessive corruption” in the government which led to the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The Patel Nagar MLA had announced his resignation both from the Delhi Cabinet as well as the party on April 10, accusing it of being “mired in the quicksand of graft” and “ignoring the Dalit community”. “Serving as minister… I came face to face with the fraud being run in the name of the poor of Delhi and the incessant lies that were peddled…,” Anand alleged, accusing the government of charges ranging from flouting reservation norms for SC/ST/OBC citizens to overlooking them when it came …

In battleground UP, Modi, Yogi hold far more rallies, roadshows than Akhilesh, Gandhis | Political Pulse News

With Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai busy campaigning in Varanasi from where he is contesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Gandhi siblings addressing just one rally and a roadshow so far, the Congress has left its UP campaign during the first two phases of elections largely to AICC general secretary in charge of the state Avinash Pande, who focused mainly on holding INDIA bloc co-ordination meetings in the districts. In comparison, over the three weeks leading up to April 26, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had addressed 38 rallies and prabudh sammelans (intellectuals’ conferences). Even PM Modi addressed seven public meetings and led two roadshows until April 26 as against one road show in Saharanpur by AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, which she held for party candidate Imran Masood. In this period, Rahul Gandhi addressed just one rally, jointly with SP chief Akhilesh Yadav in Amroha for Congress candidate Danish Ali. In UP, where the Congress campaigns have been led by one or the other Gandhi sibling over the past several …

Mayor polls, school supplies: L-G and High Court red-flag missing Delhi CM | Delhi News

From the time Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested in the Delhi excise policy case on March 21 and later sent to judicial custody, the ruling AAP has claimed that this could become a ground for the dismissal of its government in Delhi. And now two observations in two days on the missing CM, and a fresh salvo from the BJP on a “Constitutional crisis” in Delhi, have raised its apprehension. On Thursday, the mayoral elections proposed for Friday were deferred with Lt Governor V K Saxena underlining the “peculiar and unprecedented circumstances where the serving Chief Minister is under judicial custody as an undertrial prisoner involved in a corruption case and, therefore, cannot discharge his constitutionally obligated functions”. “I do not deem it appropriate to exercise my power as Administrator to appoint the Presiding Officer in absence of inputs from the Chief Minister,” Saxena noted in a file on the Municipal Corporation’s proposal to hold elections for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor at 11 am, Friday. “It is a requirement of law that… …
