Karate India Organisation was never recognised as NSF: IOA

The Indian Olympic Association on Monday banned the Karate India Organisation (KIO) on grounds of misgovernance and unauthorised team selection. The IOA, in a letter dated June 1, 2026, directed KIO to refrain from conducting or organising National Championship and from selecting, fielding, nominating or purporting to represent Indian teams or athletes in any international competition without lawful authorisation. The move is likely to impact India’s participation at the Asian Games. At the previous edition fo the Games, the organisers had refused to accept entries from India. The team was selected by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and since KIO was not part of the selection the Asian Karate Federation did not accept the entries. Meanwhile, the letter confirmed that “KIO has never been recognised by the Government of India as a National Sports Federation for karate under the provisions of the National Sports Development Code of India.” “Consequently, KIO is not entitled to use the word “India” in its nomenclature, nor can it claim any status or authority associated with such usage, except …

It further noted that the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has not authorised any private entity to collect participation fees from athletes for international events in this manner. “The organisation is neither recognised nor affiliated with @IndiaSports, @Media_SAI, or any of its associated bodies. Thinking inside the box: India recreates Asian Games housing at elite training hubs | Sport-others News

3 min readMar 5, 2026 08:00 PM IST Shipping containers — more commonly stacked at ports than seen at multi-sport events — are set to double up as athletes’ accommodation at this year’s Asian Games, prompting India to prepare its contingent for a stay unlike any before. Leaving nothing to chance, India has begun installing container-style housing units at elite training centres in Patiala and Bengaluru. The idea is to give athletes first-hand experience of the compact living spaces before they travel to Japan for the Games, to be held in Aichi-Nagoya from September 19 to October 4. In a cost-conscious move, the organisers have done away with the traditional village and opted for repurposed containers and a docked cruise liner to house athletes. While some delegations will be housed aboard a cruise liner anchored at a port, others will stay in converted container units. India has already sought land-based accommodation for its athletes, especially those in precision sports such as shooting and archery, to minimise any pre-competition discomfort. A sports ministry official said the …

NSG Act transition could see Kalyan Chaubey remain AIFF president despite ISL disruption

The Union Sports Ministry has decided to relax election timelines for national sports federations (NSFs), allowing those scheduled to go to polls in the coming months to defer their elections until December 31, 2026.  The move is intended to give federations adequate time to implement structural and constitutional changes mandated under the National Sports Governance (NSG) Act, which is set for full implementation from January 2026. The decision was communicated through a formal letter to all NSFs and the Indian Olympic Association, citing the “foundational” nature of reforms required under the new law. These include restructuring general bodies, aligning voting members with the Act’s provisions, and amending constitutions and bye-laws to meet compliance standards. The relaxation is significant for bodies such as the All India Football Federation, which is due to hold elections next year, as well as the IOA. During the extended period, existing executive committees will continue in office through a one-time tenure extension, subject to approval by their respective general bodies. The ministry clarified that this exemption will not apply where court …

Factional fights, aggrieved athletes: In 10 years, about 770 sports cases in court; 200-plus governance related | Sport-others News

Earlier this month, the Delhi High Court stayed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) order suspending the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) over the delay in holding elections. Last Friday, the BFI’s Himachal Pradesh unit threatened to take the federation to court for rejecting the nomination of its presidential candidate, former Union Minister Anurag Thakur, for the March 28 polls. Boxing isn’t the only sport seeking judicial intervention in administrative issues. In fact, it is among the 49 sports where the courts are moderators, with a significant number of cases related to disputes over governance body elections or team selection. According to data compiled by sports law experts, since 2015, approximately 770 lawsuits related to sports and sporting bodies are at different stages in the courts and central tribunals across the country. Of these, 462 are in High Courts and 22 in the Supreme Court. Story continues below this ad While most of the lawsuits are routine administrative matters plaguing government-run sports bodies, 200-odd cases are those where a national sports federation is either a petitioner …
