Delhi HC grills IOA over failure to follow order on WFI affairs

The Delhi High Court grilled the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) over its failure to abide by an order about the re-constitution of an ad-hoc committee for the operation of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The WFI has been serving a ban by the sports ministry since December 24, 2023, three days after Sanjay Singh, a Brij Bhushan loyalist, was elected the new WFI chief in the polls. Justice Sachin Datta, who was hearing a review petition filed by the IOA, said the federation filed the petition in the guise of seeking clarifications about their move on the order passed on August 16, 2024. “It is a review in the guise of clarification. The order was passed on August 16, 2024 and it is already six months. In law today, the ad-hoc committee is in charge,” Justice Datta said. He added: “I have noticed one thing, the IOA has taken proactive steps in the National Games, it has appointed ad-hoc committees, then why is it so reluctant to do so here?” In the interim order, …

Delhi HC overturns removal of taekwondo DOC for National Games

The Delhi High Court on Thursday set aside the removal of Taekwondo’s Director of Competition (DOC) for the National Games 2025 by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), ruling that the allegations of corruption against him lacked “cogent material.” The National Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC) removed DOC PaT Praveen Kumar on January 31, accusing him of accepting bribes to manipulate results in 10 of the 16 weight categories even before the competition began. He was replaced by S Dinesh Kumar. While delivering the order, Justice Sachin Datta stated, “No rationale is disclosed for replacing the DOC who is not one of the technical officials, and has no role to play in adjudging fixtures.” The GTCC’s decision was based on a report by the three-member Prevention of Manipulation of Competition Committee (PMCC), presided over by chairperson Sunaina Kumari, which recommended Kumar’s removal. However, the court noted that the allegations, which dated back to 2012, lacked substantive evidence. “Neither of these complaints is accompanied by any cogent material and contains bare allegations. It is notable that the …

Hosting the 2036 Olympics is India’s ultimate ambition, but before that acquiring the hosting experience is important, so among several other events, India is now considering a bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. India last hosted the CWG in 2010. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) expressed its willingness to bid for the Games during an informal discussion with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Chris Jenkins and chief executive Katie Sadlier, who were on a visit to India to explore the possibility of hosting the centenary edition, reported Indian Express. The inaugural edition of the CWG was held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. At the time, it was known as the British Empire Games. In recent times, CWG has struggled to find hosts. The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow after the Australian city of Brisbane pulled out citing rising costs of hosting the Games. Uncertainty looms over India’s Asian Winter Games participation

Uncertainty looms over India’s Asian Winter Games participation

India’s participation in the Asian Winter Games, starting February 7 in Harbin, China, is uncertain after the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) denied accreditation requests for new players in ice hockey and snowboarding. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had initially recommended a 76-member contingent across ice skating, skiing, and ice hockey but faced pushback from the Sports Ministry. The Sports Ministry had raised concerns over the IOA’s initial list, citing a lack of international experience for many athletes. It approved only 35 athletes stating in a letter that only the top three athletes or teams in a particular discipline with previous international exposure may be approved. After an initial refusal to clear the ice hockey team, the ministry on Sunday cleared a 23-member ice hockey team after trials in Leh. However, OCA refused to process the fresh accreditation. IOA president PT Usha criticized the intervention of the sports ministry and the subsequent fresh trials that were held. Usha backed the original team selected by the Ice Hockey Association of India, an affiliate of the International …

IOA president PT Usha wants National Games medal programme restricted to events in Olympics, CWG and Asian Games

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said in a statement on Thursday that IOA President PT Usha will propose that only sporting disciplines that feature in the Olympics, Commonwealth and Asian Games be considered for inclusion in the future National Games. Usha’s move is aimed at preventing “regional sports” from being elevated to medal events. The IOA statement said that the legendary athlete-turned-office bearer Usha intends to table the proposal in the next General Body Meeting of the IOA. The statement added that only those sports whose national governing bodies are in “good standing” with the IOA as a national federation for one year before the commencement of the National Games should be included in the National Games programme. “Over recent editions, inclusion of indigenous regional sports as demonstration events has been a notable feature, aimed at engaging local audiences and promoting regional sports culture. However, during the last edition, several regional sports were elevated to medal events by the Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC). The IOA recognizes the value of these sports but emphasizes the …

IOA president PT Usha accuses sports ministry of undermining sports governance

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha accused the sports ministry of interfering in the affairs of national federations in a strongly worded letter. Usha said the ministry has “undermined the credibility of sports governance”. With the ministry at loggerheads with the IOA for recognising the Indian Golf Union (IGU) elections won by the Harish Kumar Shetty-led faction, Usha said sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya is not being “properly apprised” of various important issues concerning national federations, including the contentious IGU polls. In a letter dated January 2 and signed by the undersecretary, the ministry said the IOA’s act of according recognition to Shetty’s faction can “create avoidable duplication and confusion” which may not withstand legal scrutiny. In her response, Usha said, “The manner in which this letter has been issued appears procedurally incorrect and reflects a lack of verification of the facts on record and a complete non application of mind by the Under Secretary.” “Sir, since I have assumed office in the lOA, it has become more and more apparent that the staff of …
