Indian sports wish list – Dream Headlines for the rest of 2026

Indian sports wish list – Dream Headlines for the rest of 2026

A miserable sporting January, would you not agree? Outside of the effervescence of the WPL and the radiance of Virat Kohli, what else made news in the first month of the year? India’s boxing nationals start four days after schedule because of government restrictions in force due to severe pollution. Within two weeks of the new year, two girl trainees, 15 and 17, are found hanging in their room at Sports Authority of India’s hostel in Kollam. **EDS, YEARENDERS 2025: WOMEN IN SPORTS** Navi Mumbai: India’s players celebrates with the trophy during the presentation ceremony after winning the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, at the DY Patil Stadium, in Navi Mumbai, early Monday, Nov. 3, 2025. And the latest is news of pole-vaulters, including national champion and record holder, being asked to get off a train as they were carrying their competition poles and left arguing for five hours with …

Vaishnavi Sharma’s international debut is a reward for domestic performances, says coach Amol Muzumdar

Vaishnavi Sharma’s international debut is a reward for domestic performances, says coach Amol Muzumdar

It was something of a surprise when Vaishnavi Sharma – widely touted as one of the most promising name in the mega auction pool for WPL – found no takers from the five franchises. The young left-arm spinner from Madhya Pradesh, who just turned 20 last week, was India’s leading wicket-taker at the U19 World Cup earlier this year, including a memorable 5/5 against Sri Lanka where she also registered a hat-trick. In the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy she was again at the top of wicket-taking charts with 21 from 9 innings. While a WPL bid has proved elusive for now, head coach Amol Muzumdar said on Thursday that the promising spinner has been rewarded with an international debut against Sri Lanka based on the consistency of her domestic exploits. “I think she responded really well,” Muzumdar said in Thiruvananthapuram ahead of the third T20I. “Credit to her that she comes from under-19. And I would like to stress that domestic performance was rewarded by the selectors. So real credit to them.” Vaishnavi impressed with …

As ‘Harman puttar’ brings home World Cup trophy, quaint Moga basks in her glory

As ‘Harman puttar’ brings home World Cup trophy, quaint Moga basks in her glory

In Punjab’s quaint town Moga, Harmanpreet Kaur Bhullar, now the country’s first women’s cricket team Captain to lift the ICC Women’s World Cup Trophy, and her family, shattered many glass ceilings. Until a few years ago, families in this semi-rural town would hardly allow their daughters to pursue sports. In those very local grounds and parks, Harmanpreet grew up playing cricket and football with boys. Today, Moga is celebrating its “Harman Puttar” as she has brought home the trophy. The force behind Harmanpreet was her father Harmandar Singh Bhullar, a sports enthusiast who otherwise worked at the Moga district court as a clerk for living. Locals remember how little Harmanpreet would accompany her father to the grounds of Guru Nanak College and play cricket and football with boys. It was on one such day that her first coach and mentor Kamaldeesh Singh Sodhi, noticed her and offered free cricket coaching at his private school, and the rest became history. Harmanpreet Kaur’s India gear up for home ODI World Cup with tri-nation series in Sri Lanka, also featuring South Africa

Harmanpreet Kaur’s India gear up for home ODI World Cup with tri-nation series in Sri Lanka, also featuring South Africa

There is a good case to be made that between the two white-ball formats, the Indian women’s team is better suited to the 50-over format. With an ODI World Cup coming up in home conditions (in perhaps a hybrid model, based on the decision regarding Pakistan’s matches), a tri-nation tournament in Sri Lanka comes as a good opportunity to assess where the team stands. Playing primarily evening matches in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) recently, Harmanpreet Kaur and Co will have to get used to day fixtures in the subcontinent heat as they face hosts Sri Lanka and a solid South African side led by Laura Wolvaardt. Under head coach Amol Muzumdar, the Indian think tank has been tinkering with the squads quite a lot in recent times. With Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh the only regulars apart from Harmanpreet, the bowling line-up has witnessed a lot of chopping and changing. Story continues below this ad The squad selected for this tri-nation sees Arundhati Reddy and Sneh Rana – a pacer …

14-year-old Ira Jadhav slams 346 in U-19 cricket breaks Smriti Mandhana’s record | Cricket News

14-year-old Mumbai opener Ira Jadhav on Sunday became the first Indian to slam a triple hundred in U19 cricket. Opening the batting for Mumbai in the U19 Women’s One Day Trophy, Jadhav waltzed into the record books as she broke India batter Smriti Mandhana’s age-group record for the highest U19 score by an Indian. Jadhav sent the hapless Meghalaya attack at the Alur Cricket Ground on an unprecedented leather hunt, collecting 42 fours and 16 sixes in her marathon innings. The teenager finished unbeaten on 346 off 157 balls as Mumbai mounted a mammoth 563/3 in 50 overs – the highest score by an Indian women’s domestic side across all tournaments and age groups. Jadhav is the first Indian (man or woman) to record a triple century across any BCCI-organised limited-overs tournament. Having picked the bat up for the first time when she was eight years old, Ira Jadhav had listed herself in the WPL auction 2025 list in December. However, marked among the youngest players in the mini-auction pool, Jadhav found no bidders. Alongside …
