Kerala: PNG gas leak in Thiruvananthapuram after road work damages pipeline

A PNG gas pipeline was damaged during road construction work at Kumarapuram here on Tuesday afternoon, causing a leak. An officer from Chackai fire station said that information of the gas leak was received around 12.50 pm and a team was immediately dispatched to the area. He further said that the valve of the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) pipeline was closed immediately and the personnel of the fire and rescue service are overseeing the repair work. “Once the remaining gas from the pipe is expelled, the repair work will be carried out,” the officer said. Local residents alleged that the pipeline should have been laid much deeper, and a major tragedy was averted due to God”s grace. BJP MLA V Muraleedharan, who reached the spot, said there was no need to be concerned as it was natural gas and would not catch fire easily. “There might be temporary difficulty for people in the area who may have inhaled it,” he said. Trustees of the Shri Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Sansthan on Tuesday appealed to devotees to avoid travelling to Alandi in Pune district for the annual ceremony scheduled on July 8 due to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall. The trustees requested devotees to join the procession at a later halt once weather conditions improve. They said the departure ceremony will be held with only a limited number of participants as a precautionary measure. TPG’s investment is being made through TPG Rise Climate, the firm’s dedicated climate investing platform, as part of its Global South Initiative, a strategy launched in partnership with ALTÉRRA to scale climate solutions across emerging markets. ICICI Bank will hold up to a 5% stake in the company. While NIIF and TPG did not disclose the value of the transaction, market estimates peg the deal at around Rs 5,000 crore. The main reasons cited are the non-appointment of necessary human resources, including teaching and non-teaching faculties and non-development of other infrastructure, including buildings. The Medical Education Department has now decided to complete the recruitment process as early as possible and submit a proposal to the NMC for permission to set up these three colleges by October 2026. Sribharat on Monday inaugurated infrastructure works worth ₹40 lakh at the Zilla Parishad High School in Sunil Sharma Colony, Chinnagadili, executed under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS). The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra has achieved a significant milestone in the current calendar year, with the number of pilgrims paying obeisance at the revered cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir”s Reasi district crossing the 50-lakh mark on June 22. This represents an impressive increase of over 27.3 per cent compared to the 39.84 lakh pilgrims who visited the shrine during the corresponding period last year, an official said on Tuesday. “During the same period in 2025, approximately 39.84 lakh pilgrims had visited the holy Shrine, whereas the Yatra during the current year has recorded 50.70 lakh pilgrims, reflecting a substantial increase of 10.86 lakh devotees,” a spokesperson of the Shrine Board said.
