VIBHU A bulk of the 1,100 lights that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) installed as early as March 2025 on the 17-km-long Container Road (NH 966A), which links the Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal with Kalamassery, remain non-functional. As a result, much of the busy and accident-prone stretch continues to remain pitch dark. The agency agreed to install adequate lighting along the entire four-lane Container Road following intervention by the Kerala High Court, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), NGOs, road safety enthusiasts, and people’s representatives, after over two dozen fatal accidents, especially involving two-wheeler riders and parked container lorries, over the past decade. “Over time, apart from accidents, the corridor turned into a hub for criminal activity and waste dumping, all under the cover of darkness,” the police said. The arrests were made after the banners were found displayed without permission in a public area of the town. According to Tirupati East Police Station Circle Inspector Srinivasulu, the accused put up the banners at Annamayya Circle, which falls under the station’s jurisdiction. The content on the flexes was described as provocative and capable of disturbing public peace and order. The arrested persons have been identified as Kalikiri Kranti Chaitanya and Duggineni Mohan Krishna. Acting on a complaint filed by Chinnepalli Kiran Kumar, a resident of Tirupati town, police registered cases against them under relevant sections of the law. Now pay 7.5% penalty for not installing tertiary-treated water connections | Chandigarh News

For residents and institutions owning properties of one kanal and above, who have not yet installed tertiary-treated water connections, will now face a penalty of 7.5 per cent on the total water bill. The decision was taken during the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation’s General House meeting on Tuesday. According to the Chandigarh Water Supply Bylaws, 2015, tertiary-treated (TT) water connections are mandatory for owners with properties of one kanal and above. The Chandigarh civic body has also proposed selling TT water at Rs 7 per kilolitre, a prominent increase from the current rate of Rs 2.50 per kilolitre. According to the municipal corporation (MC) data, of the 7,385 one-kanal houses, only 2,906 have installed TT water connections. And as far as institutions are concerned, only 150 of the 414 institutions have complied with. The Bombay High Court Friday directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other civic bodies in Maharashtra to “clearly intimate” the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav mandals to mandatorily follow Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines and abide by a condition that they will not install Ganesh idol made of Plaster of Paris (PoP). The court pulled up the BMC and other civic bodies for failing to effectively implement the guidelines for a long time to stop the use of PoP idols and persuade mandals and idol makers to avoid the use of PoP. It suggested the state government come up with a statutory mechanism with deterrent measures including imposing fines in case of violation of guidelines. Noting that the permissions to various mandals have been granted by now, the bench said the mandals shall be informed that they shall mandatorily follow guidelines. The court added that in cases where permissions are already granted, an additional condition shall be immediately added to not install PoP idols. Tensions prevailed in Silai Baragaon village of Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district following the death of a Dalit teenager during a clash over the installation of a board with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s photo on a disputed public land. The US Supreme Court on Monday let Meta Platforms’s WhatsApp pursue a lawsuit accusing Israel’s NSO Group of exploiting a bug in the WhatsApp messaging app to install spy software allowing the surveillance of 1,400 people, including journalists, human rights activists and dissidents. The justices turned away NSO‘s appeal of a lower court’s decision that the lawsuit could move forward. NSO had argued that it is immune from being sued because it was acting as an agent for unidentified foreign governments when it installed the Pegasus spyware. President Joe Biden’s administration had urged the justices to reject NSO’s appeal, noting that the US State Department had never before recognized a private entity acting as an agent of a foreign state as being entitled to immunity.
