India now has over 400 space start-ups, Govt tells Rajya Sabha

India’s space sector has witnessed measurable gains since June 2020, when space was opened to private players, with the number of space start-ups increasing from one in 2014 to more than 400 at present, and cumulative private investment crossing USD 600 million, the government informed Parliament on Thursday. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said in 2026 so far, private investment worth USD 187 million has been reported and 105 authorisations have been issued to non-government entities (NGEs) as on July 7. The Department of Space (DoS) has tightened the rules governing resignations and voluntary retirement of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientists and engineers working on mission-critical projects, amid reports that more than 100 personnel have left the country’s premier space agency in recent months. The move is aimed at ensuring continuity in strategically important programmes, including the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission, future lunar exploration projects and advanced satellite missions. Department of Space issues new directive In a memorandum issued this week, the Department of Space directed major ISRO centres not to routinely accept resignation or voluntary retirement requests from Group ‘A’ scientific and technical personnel associated with national missions. Decades ago, Isro scientists placed the Indian space agency’s first communication satellite on a bullock cart. It was steered into an open field, as an improvised solution to a problem the agency had no facility to solve at the time. A bullock cart was used during the testing of APPLE’s antenna prior to the launch. (Isro) The satellite’s antenna had run into trouble. Issues were detected in its Telemetry, Tracking and Control (TT&C) links, crucial for maintaining communication. But testing called for a proper antenna range, with the satellite structure placed under a thermal blanket, a kind of facility Isro did not have then. So, the scientists came up with an indigenous fix — they put the satellite on a bullock cart to ensure a non-magnetic environment and ran the test in the open. That satellite was APPLE. The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) Friday announced the launch of Mission MITRA (Mapping of Interoperable Traits and Response Assessment) to take place between April 2-9 in Leh. Results obtained from Mission MITRA will contribute towards designing and developing India’s manned Gaganyaan mission. As part of this mission, four astronaut-designates – Shubhanshu Shukla, Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, Ajit Krishnan, and Angad Pratap – will be tested for their physiological, psychological, and operational dynamics under the behavioural set of tests.
