BJP seeks Rs 100 crore in defamation notice against Omar Abdullah

The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the BJP has served a Rs 100 crore defamation notice to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his remarks that the party was offering Rs 20-30 crore to MLAs to bring down his government. On his party convention on July 11 to observe the 26th death anniversary of his grandmother, Begum Akbar Jahan popularly known as the ‘Madr-e-Meherbaan’ (Benevolent mother), Omar Abdullah alleged that a senior BJP leader had approached one of his party’s MLAs belonging to Jammu division offering Rs 20-30 crore, a ministerial berth and statehood to defect so that the National Conference government is brought down. The defamation notice demands Omar Abdullah’s unconditional public apology and withdrawal of the remarks within seven days. The Jammu and Kashmir government Friday issued an order instructing all officials of the administration to extend cooperation and accord “priority” to elected representatives of the union territory. Highlighting the crucial role of elected representatives in governance in a directive issued Friday Commissioner/Secretary General Administration Department (GAD), B S Raju wrote: “It therefore becomes imperative that all government departments, officers and officials extend due cooperation and accord priority to issues highlighted/flagged by these public representatives”. In the backdrop of J&K’s elected government working in a UT set up for the first time and the bureaucracy caught between the Raj Bhawan and the chief minister, newly-elected MLAs have raised concerns of a “loss of connect” between the bureaucracy and the people. J&K was a state before but became a UT in 2019. The cabinet, which discussed the growing demand for revising the reservation limit in government jobs in Jammu and Kashmir, decided to form a sub-committee to engage with all stakeholders on the issue. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, other Ministers and Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo participated in the meeting. This was the second meeting of this government during its tenure of over one month. J&K govt. delegates panchayats’ powers to Block Development Officers

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday appointed the Block Development Officers (BDOs) from local bureaucracy as administrators of panchayats, in the wake of the end of the term of 28,000 panchs or elected grassroots representatives on January 9. “The term of Halqa Panchayat(s) has expired on 09.01.2024 and the government is satisfied it cannot be constituted immediately,” reads an official order.  Invoking the powers under Section 9 of the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989, the government appointed the BDOs as administrators “for running the affairs of the panchayat halqas under their jurisdiction for a period of six months from January 10, 2024 or till further orders,” it added. With the term of panchayats coming to an end, there is no elected institution in vogue in Jammu and Kashmir. The terms of both urban local bodies and panchayats have completed their term in the past six months. The previous Assembly elections were held in 2014 and Jammu and Kashmir has seen no elections since the PDP-BJP alliance fell apart in 2018. Source link
