GHMC seals Jayalalithaa’s Hyderabad property over Rs 82 lakh tax dues

Municipal authorities in Hyderabad on Tuesday seized a residential house of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, over property tax arrears.  Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials sealed the G plus 4 structure belonging to the late leader in Srinagar colony under the limits of circle 38 in Yousufguda area. According to officials, the property bearing house number 8-3-1099 A is registered in the name of Jayalalithaa. The GHMC took the action as the property tax arrears mounted to over Rs.82 lakh. According to officials, property tax arrears related to this building had been accumulating since 2017. Deputy Commissioner Suresh issued notices last month to individuals associated with the property. As the concerned individuals failed to respond, GHMC officials sealed the house. According to officials, after accounting for applicable rebates under the OTS (One-Time Settlement) scheme, the outstanding tax arrears amount to Rs 82,91,822. As the OTS will remain valid only till March 31, the arrears are likely to increase further. The building was assessed under the commercial category as it was being used …

Jayalalithaa, in Hyderabad was seized for a day by the civic authorities, as the owners defaulted on payment of property tax. The property in Srinagar Colony was reportedly released on Tuesday (March 31, 2026) after the process for payment was initiated. Tax on the stilt-plus-four storeys property has been due since 2017, accumulating to a total ₹1.6 crore along with arrears and penal interest, officials informed. After the waiver of 90% interest according to the One Time Settlement scheme applicable till March 31, the total payable amount came down close to ₹83 lakh. On the eve of the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and AMMK founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran in open letters to their party members came down heavily on the ruling DMK and “traitors”. The Tamil Nadu government has officially taken possession of the seized assets belonging to late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, marking a significant development in the protracted disproportionate assets case. A special court has said 27 kg of gold and diamond jewelry — part of the material evidence in the disproportionate assets case against former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister late J Jayalalithaa and others — would be handed over to the neighbouring state`s government on March 6 and 7, paving the way for unlocking value of the assets to mobilise the Rs 100 crore fine imposed on her. While 20 kg could be sold or auctioned, the remaining was exempted by the Court on Monday considering the fact that the late Jayalalithaa inherited them from her mother, reported newss agency PTI. Judge H A Mohan, presiding over the XXXII Additional City Civil & Sessions court, had last month directed the transfer of valuables seized from Jayalalithaa to the Tamil Nadu government, reported PTI. Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was died in December 2016. Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday adopted a bill to repeal an Act, passed in 2020, to convert the Poes Garden residence of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa into a memorial. The Tamil Nadu Puratchi Thalaivi Dr J Jayalalithaa Memorial Foundation Act, 2020, was enacted to establish a foundation to convert the “Veda Nilayam,” the residence of the former AIADMK supremo into a memorial. On November 24, 2021, the Madras High Court quashed the proceedings and directed that the keys to the late Chief Minister’s sprawling house, here, be handed over to her legal heir. Accordingly, the keys were handed over to her niece J Deepa on December 11, 2021, who was the petitioner in the case. “The keys of the said building have been handed over to the writ petitioners as ordered by the High Court.
