‘Bid to silence him’: Tarun Tejpal’s daughter says he was targeted for investigative journalism after his conviction

Days after former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal was convicted in a rape case by Bombay High Court, his daughter Cara Tejpal has decried foul play. Cara has reportedly claimed that Tarun was targeted because of Tehelka magazine’s investigative journalism, with the rape allegation being used as a means to “silence” him. Former editor of Tehelka magazine Tarun Tejpal was sent to jail for 10 years in connection with a 2013 rape case (ANI Video Grab) Cara, in a statement on Saturday, said she did not care if she was labelled a “rape apologist” or the “child of a rapist” as she linked the rape case against Tarun to Tehelka’s investigative journalism and the “controversies surrounding the magazine’s reports on corruption” and the alleged wrongdoing by those in power, news agency PTI reported. ‘Examined evidence for 13 years’ “I’m not that 23-year-old anymore. I’m 36 and I couldn’t care less about being called a ‘rape apologist’ or ‘child of rapist’ or whatever vile slur is used against me,” she was quoted as saying. Also read: Indian-origin …

She said, “I think yellow journalism had no control that time. And one could not probably even clear the air sooner, faster, like you can now do on Instagram or put out a post and you have a direct interaction with your audience, which was not earlier” Raveena claimed that things worked …

Opinion | The Washington Post And The Market’s Verdict On Moral Journalism | India News

Last Updated:February 05, 2026, 20:44 IST The paper’s editors appear to have failed to look beyond their own ideological vanities and activism to recognise how dramatically the ground had shifted For years, large parts of Western journalism have confused activism with reporting. File pic/AFP The Washington Post, long regarded as a grandee of Western liberalism, is teetering on the precipice of irrelevance. Its proprietor, billionaire Jeff Bezos, has effectively called time on the paper’s haughty certitude by cutting back funds needed to run the broadsheet, forcing job cuts estimated at close to 30 per cent. Hundreds of positions have evaporated, leaving editors and reporters contemplating a moribund future. More than one retrenched journalist has described the layoffs as the “death of democracy”. One insider reportedly characterised the newsroom atmosphere as “funereal”. Bezos is being blamed for sacrificing the “pursuit of truth” at the altar of political patronage. That explanation is convenient but incomplete. The more uncomfortable reality is that WaPo’s journalism was rejected by the market. If this were merely a question of money, Bezos …

Dear Reader, your trust is most important. Take this HT survey and help us serve you better| India News

Dear Reader, At Hindustan Times, we’re listening: Take our short reader survey, and tell us how you prefer to get your news (HT Photo) Newsrooms like to say that they put their readers and viewers first. But with information flowing at breakneck speeds in today’s digital multiverse, they sometimes find it difficult to pause and connect with the people they serve. It needs to be earned, sometimes afresh with each new story, each new reader. And earn we must. In this fast-evolving world, you, dear reader, have been a constant. And we remain grateful. Journalism was never about standing on a pedestal and delivering information. We stand among you, with a direct …
