Home Minister Priyank Kharge | Photo Credit: File Photo The Karnataka government is planning to establish a Karnataka Urban Policing Innovation Centre (KUPIC) to strengthen urban policing through technology, research and innovation, Home Minister Priyank Kharge said on Thursday. The proposal was discussed during a detailed review meeting with senior police officers and expert advisory groups to examine the framework for the proposed centre, which aims to prepare the State’s urban police force for emerging challenges. Addressing the meeting, Mr. Kharge said rapid urbanisation has brought significant changes in the nature of crime, public safety concerns and traffic management, making it essential to adopt advanced technological solutions and institutionalise innovation within the policing system. The proposed centre will focus on research, innovation and technology development to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of urban policing. It will leverage emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analytics, smart surveillance systems and digital platforms to improve policing capabilities and support evidence-based decision-making. The medal is awarded jointly by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and COSPAR every two years in honour of Vikram Sarabhai who is considered the father of the Indian space programme. The award recognises her work on stellar populations, blue straggler stars, UVIT/AstroSat, future telescopes, and Hanle Dark Sky Reserve (HDSR). She received the award on Monday at the 46th COSPAR General Assembly in Florence, Italy. “I am extremely happy to receive this award. All three victims were aged between 20 and 25 years. ​According to preliminary reports, the incident took place between 1 AM and 2 AM inside the industrial plant. After the incident, the five labourers were rushed to the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in neighbouring Raichur district, where three were declared brought dead. The injured persons — Hemanth and Shivakumar, both from Andhra Pradesh’s Ananthapur district — are undergoing treatment. One of them is stated to be battling for life. Our meter readers informed them that they would lose the scheme’s benefits if they declined to share the information, and they agreed to it. As we move towards completing the survey by the end of August, the number of those set to lose the benefits is likely to increase,” an official said. The official said that 90% of the households that refused to provide information fall under Bescom’s jurisdiction. Only 87,81,590 door-to-door verifications have been completed across the State since its launch on July 1. The Gruha Jyothi scheme currently has 1.65 crore beneficiaries. The Karnataka government has initiated the upgradation of the Hardware Security Module (HSM) that powers Aadhaar authentication services across government departments, with the aim of strengthening digital governance, cybersecurity, and uninterrupted citizen services. Home, Information Technology & Biotechnology and e-Governance Minister Priyank Kharge said the upgrade is a preventive technology enhancement aimed at ensuring higher security, improved reliability, and continued compliance with national security standards. Improving security Under the Aadhaar Act, Aadhaar numbers are not meant to be stored in local databases. Instead, they are to be stored in a secure Aadhaar Data Vault in encrypted form. The encryption keys that protect the data are housed in a Hardware Security Module, a specialised tamper-resistant device designed to prevent unauthorised access. In Karnataka, nearly 10 to 12 lakh Aadhaar authentication requests are processed across various government departments. The existing HSM setup, which supports these authentication services, has reportedly encountered a few issues, necessitating the upgrade. The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) that met in Delhi on Thursday (July 30, 2026) upheld the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee’s (CWRC) order that Karnataka should release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu at a rate of 3,500 cusecs a day for 15 days. The CWMA, which is the apex body that monitors the implementation of water release by the upper riparian States as per the Supreme Court’s verdict, asked Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu as per the CWRC’s order. The CWRC had on Tuesday (July 28, 2026) ordered Karnataka to commence release of water to Tamil Nadu with effect from Wednesday (July 29). However, Karnataka which is reeling under serious drought, had filed an appeal against the CWRC before the CWMA.
