Taking serious exception to the conduct of a judicial officer on a public road, the High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday stayed the investigation against three persons based on a First Information Report (FIR) registered against them for allegedly overtaking a private car of the judicial officer at Malur in Kolar district recently. Justice M. Nagaprasanna passed the interim order on a petition filed by Vinay K.M., 24, his mother V. Kavitha, 48, and his grandfather P. Venkatesh, 70, of Malur. The petitioners had challenged the FIR registered against them based on the complaint lodged by Gayathri, Principal Civil Judge and JMFC, Malur. After the petitioner number-1 overtook the car driven by the judicial officer’s husband and told them to drive the car slowly, the judicial officer’s husband chased the two-wheeler and stopped them at a distance. A job racket promising appointments as Panchayat Development Officers (PDOs) in the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department has come to light after a senior manager of a private pharmaceutical company allegedly lost ₹26 lakh to fraudsters. According to a complaint filed at the Vidhana Soudha Police Station, the victim, a senior manager at a private pharmaceutical company in Whitefield, alleged that the accused convinced him they could secure a PDO post through their political and bureaucratic contacts. The police said the prime accused, Santosh Hosamani, came into contact with him in December 2024 and claimed to be working in the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) with strong links to Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) officials. He initially demanded ₹50 lakh for the job and allegedly collected ₹26 lakh in instalments. When the appointment order did not materialise, the complainant questioned the accused. Karnataka Upalokayukta justice B. Veerappa, during a surprise inspection of the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) market in Hosapete on Saturday, directed the APMC authorities to ensure that farmers are not forced to pay commission to middlemen and ordered the immediate installation of signboards declaring that collection of commission from farmers is illegal. During his visit to the APMC market, several farmers complained that officials and intermediaries were illegally collecting commission from them. Responding to the grievances on the spot, Mr. Veerappa instructed farmers not to pay commission under any circumstances and directed the APMC authorities to prominently display boards informing farmers that charging commission is prohibited by law. To ensure that farmers were not being cheated in weighing their produce, the Upalokayukta checked the weighing machine by standing on it and verified its accuracy.
