Kimmich admits Germany “fully deserved” to be eliminated after Paraguay defeat

3 min readJun 30, 2026 04:11 PM IST Germany captain Joshua Kimmich has admitted his team “fully deserved” to be eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after a shocking defeat to Paraguay in the round of 32 on Monday. Making their first World Cup appearance in 16 years, Paraguay — ranked 22 places below Germany in the FIFA men’s rankings — secured a 4-3 penalty shootout victory after the match ended 1-1 following extra time. Save for the 7-1 victory over Curacao in their campaign opener, Germany did very little in this competition to suggest they were four-time world champions. It took a last-minute Deniz Undav goal to edge past Ivory Coast, while Ecuador handed Julian Nagelsmann’s side a 2-1 defeat. The frailties in the squad were exposed once again by Paraguay, and on this occasion, it proved fatal. Speaking in the media zone after the match, Kimmich conceded Germany deserved to bow out from the round of 32. “It feels awful. We didn’t play well against any opponent. On three occasions we had …

Joshua Kimmich Ends Speculation, Signs Four-Year Contract Extension With Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich on Thursday announced Joshua Kimmich had signed a four-year extension to his contract that had been set to expire at the end of the season. Germany international Kimmich said he made his decision because Bayern is “the best environment to achieve my sporting goals. “There’s currently no better package of teammates, coaching staff and club environment for me to achieve maximum success. I feel at home here and I’m not finished yet.” After Tuesday’s 2-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen sent Bayern through to the Champions League quarter-finals, Kimmich told reporters he was set to prolong his stay at the club. After speculation he could leave Bayern in previous seasons, Kimmich has rediscovered his best form in midfield under Vincent Kompany, having played every minute in the Bundesliga until picking up a minor injury in February. Kimmich, already the national team captain, is viewed as the successor to current Bayern skipper Manuel Neuer. Sporting director Christoph Freund called the 30-year-old Kimmich “a driving force that will tirelessly drive Bayern forward in the …

Joshua Kimmich Heads Bayern Munich Past Arsenal Into Champions League Semi-Finals

A 63rd-minute Joshua Kimmich header gave Bayern Munich a 1-0 win over Arsenal and a place in the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday. The 3-2 aggregate quarter-final victory means Bayern return to the last-four for the first time since winning the title in 2020. Bayern will face Real Madrid for a place in the final after the 14-time champions overcame holder Manchester City on penalties. The result continues a poor week for Arsenal, who conceded top spot in the Premier League table on Sunday with their first league loss of 2024. “We can enjoy this one. The first half was cagey and then we upped the tempo,” Bayern striker Harry Kane told TNT. “These games are tough and we had to find our way through them. “It’s going to be a tough semi final whoever we play.” Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said his side had “wanted it so badly”. “However, you can see with many other clubs that sometimes it takes six or seven years to get to that stage.  We were very close, that …
