Kolkata: The parents of the 34-year-old doctor raped and killed at RG Kar hospital in Kolkata last year said they do not want any financial assistance after a city court ordered a sum of Rs 17 lakh to be paid to the couple who lost their daughter in the chilling crime. Sanjay Roy, a former civic police volunteer, was found guilty two days ago in the case that sparked nationwide outrage. He was sentenced to life imprisonment today with a local court observing that it was not the “rarest of rare” case – a doctrine that justifies the death penalty. Judge Anirban Das, who presided over the trial and gave his judgment at the Sealdah court, also directed a compensation of Rs 17 lakh to be paid to the victim’s parents. The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court pronounced the quantum of punishment to the convict of the RG Kar rape and murder case at 2:45 pm. During the hearing of the case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought “capital punishment” for the accused Sanjay Roy. An 18-year-old woman was found dead with burn marks on her body in Krishnanagar town of Nadia district on Wednesday morning, hours after she had left home, saying she was going out to have pizza. RG Kar: Junior doctors’ hunger strike enters 9th day, others on ‘symbolic fast’ | Kolkata News

The hunger strike by junior doctors of West Bengal to press for their demands following the RG Kar hospital incident entered the ninth day on Sunday, when people are holding a “symbolic fast” at various parts of the state to express solidarity with the agitators. Three of the junior doctors who were observing ‘fast unto death’ in Kolkata and Siliguri city in the northern part of the state have so far been hospitalised after their condition deteriorated. “Their conditions are worsening but the state administration remains unmoved,” a leader of the agitating Junior Doctors Forum said. Meanwhile, a group of former students of R G Kar hospital have reached the medical establishment for a symbolic fasting of 12 hours to express solidarity with the students on hunger strike. The R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Saturday expelled ten people, including doctors, house staff, and interns, for allegedly threatening others to fail examinations or get them ousted from the hostel, forcing other juniors to join a particular political party, sexual harassment and misconduct, forceful collection of money, lodging of false FIRs against students and physical violence. Those expelled include Ashish Pandey, a house staff member close to former R G Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with financial irregularities and corruption.
