Lab Leak or Animal? WHO Chief Tedros Says China Still Withholding Critical Covid-19 Origin Data

3 min readFeb 28, 2026 02:37 PM IST WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that the world remains highly vulnerable to future pandemics, even as the United States completed its withdrawal from the World Health Organisation following an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Tedros said the WHO still lacks adequate information from China on the origins of Covid-19 and has not received complete transparency despite formal requests. Asked whether the virus originated from a lab leak or animal transmission, Tedros said the WHO does not have enough evidence to believe, beyond reasonable doubt, any of the existing hypotheses. He stressed that determining the virus’s origin is not simply a scientific issue but also a moral one. “When we know what happened with Covid, we can prevent any future pandemics,” he said. World still vulnerable Tedros said the global community has not eliminated the risk of another major outbreak. “We are still vulnerable,” he said, noting that while many initiatives have begun based on lessons from …

Why This Gandhinagar Lab is a Game-Changer for Global Outbreak Response

Why This Gandhinagar Lab is a Game-Changer for Global Outbreak Response

Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone of the Bio-Safety Level 4 (BSL-4) Containment Facility and laboratory in his Lok Sabha constituency of Gandhinagar on Tuesday (January 13). He called it a “health shield” for India and said it heralded the “beginning of a new era of health security and biotechnology in the country”. Bio-Safety Level 4 represents the highest level of biological containment. Such laboratories are designed to safely conduct research on the world’s most dangerous and life-threatening pathogens, which are highly infectious and often lack effective vaccines or treatments. At these labs, under extremely controlled conditions that are periodically inspected and monitored based on international standards, scientists conduct advanced research on high-risk pathogens, work on the development of diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics, and conduct rapid outbreak investigation and response. The BSL-4 laboratory coming up in Sector-28 of Gandhinagar, along with an Animal Bio-Safety Level (ABSL) facility, will be a strategic national asset where research is conducted on the deadliest pathogens known to mankind, including the Ebola virus, Marburg virus, Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic …

Are lab grown diamonds fake?

Are lab grown diamonds fake?

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend — whether extracted from a mine or created in a laboratory. But for Neelam Kothari Soni, lab-grown diamonds just do not cut. “If someone gifted me lab-grown diamonds, would I be as excited? No,” she told jewellery expert Julia Chafe during a recent conversation. According to the actor, “lab-grown is a parallel market, but real natural diamonds are special and a girl’s best friend.” So, are lab-grown diamonds truly as special as real diamonds? Disha Shah, Founder of DiAi Designs, told indianexpress.com that lab-grown diamonds are often misunderstood, mostly because of the word ‘lab’. Many misconceptions suggest they are fake or artificial, but in reality, they are similar to mined diamonds as they share the same chemical, physical, and optical properties. “The only difference is their origin. One forms deep in the earth, and the other is created in a modern, controlled environment that mirrors natural processes,” she said. Shah said that lab-grown diamonds are remarkable owing to the customisation possibilities they offer. “They allow you to create pieces …
