Lakshya Sen cops yellow card for throwing racquet in 19-21, 21-15, 15-21 loss

2 min readUpdated: May 29, 2026 06:15 PM IST Things got heated on the court for Lakshya Sen as a service fault called for height a second time in his match against Koki Watanabe of Japan, saw him fling the racquet on court in disgust. Things were fast and furious as is, given the Japanese and his intensity tends to be scalding. In the first set of the quarters of the Super 750 at Singapore, Sen had already been faulted once in the opening set as he briefly argued with the chair umpire. Sen’s straight deep smashing had not been enough to offset Watanabe’s brisk angle-changers and quick reactions, as the Indian lost narrowly, with a 21-19 margin. He would receive prolonged instructions from father DK Sen in the break. His last few enforced errors that handed the set to the Japanese might’ve been playing on his mind as he picked the first point. But when his serve was called for height, an enraged Sen chucked the racquet on the floor in the direction of …

All England badminton: Exhaustion got the better of Lakshya Sen in final against Lin Chun-Yi | Badminton News

All England champion Lin Chun-Yi said he was too tired to celebrate after beating Lakshya Sen in the final on Sunday. The Taiwanese had unveiled a nice little dance after beating World No.1 Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the semis. But if Sen’s exhaustion and leaden limbs cost him the title after 373 minutes over five matches, Chun-Yi – who also took out three seeded players – admitted he was too knackered to break into a jig. “Because I was too tired after this (final) match, I didn’t plan to have a celebration. So there was no dance today,” he said. Sen’s draw didn’t make things easy for him. He faced top seed Shi Yuqi in Round 1, a particularly aggravating match-up in Round 2 with NG Ka Long Angus, desperate Chinese power-player Li Shifeng in the quarters, and the tour’s most adamant defensive rallyist in Victor Lai at the last-four stage. “The only way out is to finish in two sets. But will these opponents in early rounds allow him to?” coach Vimal Kumar asks. Taiwan’s …

The mind behind Lakshya Sen’s All England run | Badminton News

Nimrod Mon Brokman doesn’t believe in easy. The Israeli sports psychologist, who works with athletes at his Behavioral Foresight facility, has been accompanying Lakshya Sen at the All England — and his methods are anything but conventional. The latest: cycling at a heart rate of 160-170 under hypoxic conditions, where arterial oxygen saturation drops below 90 percent. “I use different, unconventional technologies and methods. This was about cognitive overload — forcing him to deal with two challenges at once,” says the Bangalore-based Mon. “Most athletes won’t like it. Lakshya says, ‘Bring it on.’ Even on match-days.” That attitude, Mon says, is rare. Working with Sen since mid-2025, he sees in the Indian shuttler a quality he has otherwise encountered only in elite military units. “I see very little fear in him when it comes to hard stuff. He laughs in the face of these challenges — that kind of temperament, I’ve seen it only in Special Forces or 9 Para.” It’s why, Mon believes, Sen is in the All England semifinals. The work between them …

India Open: Lakshya Sen exits with a quarterfinal defeat against left-handed nemesis after net gains, but drift troubles | Badminton News

Trailing 16-18 in the third set, Lakshya Sen played an extraordinary rally that brought the fans to their feet at the IG Indoor Stadium. The lethal Lin Chun Yi’s lefty smashes and half smashes were troubling Lakshya for most of the night, but in this extreme pressure moment, the Indian pulled off a miraculous behind-the-back shot to keep the shuttle alive and rushed to the net to kill the point. Lakshya pumped his fist, the crowd roared along, and just a few moments after it looked like he was out of the contest, there was hope again. But when the match ended, there was despair for the home favourite while Lin leapt around in joy. Lakshya lost 21-17, 13-21, 18-21 in 68 minutes to mark the end of the Indian interest at the Super 750 event. There was a sharp contrast in emotions when the two players were asked about that rally post-match. Lin, without even needing the help of the translator, exclaimed that Lakshya’s shot was “beautiful, very beautiful.” When it was put forth …

India Open badminton: Lakshya Sen, the solitary Indian winner; after this crucial technical switch mid-match | Badminton News

Lakshya Sen took his time to get over the missed bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. But since the second half of 2025, there is a spring in his step. The results have still been up and down, but the performances have picked up. On Thursday, after his second-round win at the India Open Super 750, when asked if he is in a better space than he has been in recent times, he responded with a big smile. “I think everyone agrees to that. Yeah, I’m in a much better space. Definitely, in terms of my game. And I’m enjoying badminton much more, I guess.” Is he doing anything off court that is helping him relax? “I am not going to tell you that,” he added with a chuckle. A lighter, freer Lakshya took time to get going against world No 13 Kenta Nishimoto but a tactical tweak halfway through the opening game turned it around for him as he beat the Japanese 21-19, 21-10 in 50 minutes. On an otherwise bleak day for home …

When Lakshya Sen trailed 2-8 in the deciding third game in Birmingham on Thursday, there was a sense of deja vu. It was the same scoreline he was on a few days back in Paris.
