Mr. Modi is visiting Lao PDR on the invitation of Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. Laos is the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) founded in 1967. Mr. Modi was accorded a traditional welcome at the airport by Lao PDR Minister of Home Affairs Vilaywong Bouddhakham while some time later, at the hotel lobby, members of the Indian diaspora greeted him with cheerful slogans. India sent the 32-tonne consignment to Myanmar on an IL-76 transport aircraft New Delhi: India has sent a second tranche of relief supplies to Myanmar under its Operation Sadbhav, which was launched two days ago to help Southeast Asian countries deal with Typhoon Yagi. Massive floods have wreaked destruction in various parts of Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam after Typhoon Yagi, said to be Asia’s most powerful storm this year, struck the three countries. Typhoon Yagi is named after the Japanese word for goat and the constellation of Capricornus. In Myanmar, the typhoon has caused the loss of hundreds of lives, massive destruction of property and has affected lakhs of people. As part of this operation, India has sent aid worth USD 1 million to Vietnam and USD 100,000 flood assistance to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). Assistance to Vietnam A special aircraft was dispatched today, carrying 35 tons of essential relief supplies to northern Vietnam. The consignment includes water purification items, water containers, blankets, kitchen utensils, and solar lanterns, aimed at alleviating the immediate needs of the affected population.  The humanitarian gesture underscores the strong bond between India and Vietnam, highlighted by their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
