Illegal immigrants from Banglaesh, Myanmar | Pushback, detention and deportation laws explained

The story so far: The fresh wave of deportation and detention drives targeting undocumented migrants from Bangladesh in several States, including West Bengal, have brought deportation laws to the spotlight. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on June 7 said that 4,800 “illegal infiltrators” have been deported to Bangladesh over the past one month. Mr. Adhikari said that “holding centres” have been set up in border districts of the State. He had earlier said that the policy of his government regarding “illegal infiltrators” was to “detect, delete and deport”. The Gujarat police also detained 362 undocumented Bangladeshi migrants and questioned more than 782 suspected foreign nationals during a State-wide crackdown under “Operation Delta Hunt” launched on June 2, 2026. According to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Union government had constituted a high-level committee on demographic change and was committed to “identifying and deporting every single infiltrator from the country.” These events, along with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s advocacy of a “pushback” policy for undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar, including Rohingyas, have …

When you use GPS, you rely on Einstein’s relativity laws | Technology News

Every time you use Google Maps to take the right turn while driving, or use GPS to drop your location to a friend, you invoke the two laws of relativity by Albert Einstein. This is why: GPS, or global positioning system, depends on satellites that orbit about 20,000 kilometres above Earth at high speeds. The clocks onboard these satellites do not tick at the same rate as clocks on the ground. We know why because of two landmark theories by Albert Einstein: Special Theory of Relativity (1905) and the General Theory of Relativity (1926). Here, the two work in opposite ways. General Relativity shows that due to the weaker gravity at their altitude the clocks should go faster by about 45 microseconds per day. The net result is that satellite clocks run roughly 38 microseconds faster each day. That difference may sound tiny, but without correcting for it, GPS positions would drift by several kilometres within a day. In other words, modern navigation works only because time itself behaves differently depending on motion and gravity …

US announces Iran port blockade: The laws governing passage through the Strait of Hormuz | Explained News

Following a deadlock in ceasefire talks, the US has announced a complete blockade of Iranian ports in response to Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. While Washington’s move may appear to mirror Iran’s strategy at first glance, it is essentially aimed at putting pressure on the energy-consuming countries, which Iran considers “friendly” and whose ships it has allowed to pass through the strait. Both the US and Iranian strategies have led to claims and counter-claims over their legality, involving terminology such as “territorial waters” and “international waters”. Here’s a look at the international legal framework that governs maritime passage and maritime combat in the context of the strategies being deployed by both countries. The Iran strategy The Strait of Hormuz is Iran’s main leverage at the negotiation table. Since the US-Israeli alliance began the war on February 28, Iran has maintained a chokehold on the strait by targeting vessels and laying mines. The move triggered one of the world’s worst energy shocks as the narrow passage accounted for around 20% of the global …

HC: PMLA overrides debt recovery laws for attachment of ‘proceeds of crime`

HC: PMLA overrides debt recovery laws for attachment of ‘proceeds of crime`

The Bombay High Court (HC) has held that the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has an overriding effect over debt recovery laws such as the SARFAESI Act and the Recovery of Debts and Bankruptcy (RDB) Act when it comes to the attachment of “proceeds of crime”, news agency PTI reported. In a judgment delivered on March 23, the Nagpur bench set aside previous orders of the PMLA Appellate Tribunal, which had favoured banks’ rights to recover debts from attached properties. The bench, comprising Justices MS Jawalkar and Nandesh Deshpande, observed that debt recovery laws like SARFAESI and RDB “would not render PMLA subservient to them due to the distinct objects and purposes of the two enactments”. The court emphasised that PMLA’s legislative objective of confiscating proceeds of crime is separate from the debt recovery framework, and hence, debt recovery laws cannot override the Act. The case dates back to a 2012 Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into Grace Industries Ltd over irregularities in coal block allocations. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) identified about Rs …
