Maharashtra rains: Massive landslide hits Ratnagiri village, residents trapped

Incessant heavy rainfall triggered a major landslide in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district, burying five houses and trapping residents under the debris, officials said on Tuesday. The incident took place in the Dahivali area of Khed tehsil on Monday night after continuous rainfall battered the region. Officials said a 75-year-old woman, identified as Kalpana Shelar, was safely rescued following the landslide. Two others, identified as Shantaram Shelar and Satish Shelar, remained trapped under the debris. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police and other emergency agencies reached the location and launched search and rescue operations. Maharashtra minister Uday Samant visited the affected area on Tuesday morning to review the ongoing rescue efforts and assess the situation. The police identified the deceased as Rakesh Kumar Mishra, 49, a master chief petty officer (MCPO II) posted at INS Shivaji. Mishra, who hailed from Mangolpuri in North West Delhi, was with his colleague, Mahendra Singh, when the incident occurred at Tiger Point. After Singh alerted the police, an accidental death report was lodged at the Lonavala rural police station. Police Inspector Dinesh Tayade said Mishra’s son was planning to come with his friends to visit Tiger Point on May 30. So, Mishra went to the spot with Singh to plan the trip. A 32-year-old man from Pune was found dead in a gorge near Lion’s Point, Lonavala in Maharashtra, in the early hours of Thursday. The man worked with an IT company in Baner, Pune. According to preliminary information by Shivdurg rescue team- Lonavala, his car was found parked at Lion’s Point early on Thursday morning. “He had reportedly sent messages and emails to his friends and wife in the early hours, following which a search was launched in the nearby gorge. The body was located around 250 feet below the point where the vehicle was parked,” said a member from Shivdurg rescue team- Lonavala. According to forest officials, the Indian Giant Squirrel was spotted on January 5, 2026, at around 7:45 am along a transect line near the Tiger Point tourist area at Mauje Atvan in the Lonavala range, while census activities were underway.
