The court urged vigilance in the digital world. (Shutterstock) Justices Anand Venkatesh and KK Ramakrishnan issued the appeal in English, Tamil, and Hindi while dismissing an appeal of a man convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in a case of rape and sexual assault. The judges, presiding at the Madurai bench of the High Court, said they were issuing the appeal or advisory in the interest of both those disproportionately targeted and society more broadly, given the rise in technology. They urged them to exercise vigilance in the digital world The bench said a moment of misplaced trust should never become a lifetime of suffering. It regretted that time constraints prevented translating the appeal into every regional language. “No matter how deep the affection, trust, or promise of confidentiality may appear, intimate photographs or videos should never be shared with anyone through electronic means.” The court said once such …

High court cites Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of prohibition, cancels liquor bar licence | Legal News

Invoking Mahatma Gandhi‘s vision of total prohibition, the Madras High Court has cancelled a liquor bar licence granted to a recreation club in Tamil Nadu‘s Karaikudi in proximity of a temple, a church and a university, holding that authorities failed to comply with mandatory legal safeguards and adequately assess public interest before permitting the sale of liquor. The licence had been challenged by local residents who alleged that the proposed bar was located close to a temple, church, hospitals and educational institutions, and the court noted that the establishment was forced to shut within two days of opening following sustained public protests. A bench of Justices N Sathish Kumar and M Jothiraman was hearing two public interest litigations (PILs) challenging an FL2 licence granted by the commissioner of prohibition and excise department to ‘Santhosam Recreation Club’ on November 12, 2025. The petitioners sought cancellation of the licence, alleging violations of statutory rules governing liquor establishments and questioning the suitability of the location. “It is pertinent to mention that Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi tried …

How maestro Ilaiyaraaja fought closest friends, billion-dollar labels to claim his music | Tamil News

Over a career spanning nearly five decades, Ilaiyaraaja has composed music for over 1,500 films and written more than 8,000 songs. By any reasonable measure, that catalogue is one of the most commercially exploited bodies of work in Indian cinema. It has played in theatres, on radio, on television, at live concerts across the world, and more recently across every streaming platform imaginable. For much of that time, the money it generated flowed primarily to producers, music labels, and event organisers. The composer himself saw very little of it. What makes Ilaiyaraaja different from every other musician this happened to is simple: he refuses to accept it Born Gnanathesigan on June 3, 1943, in Tamil Nadu, Ilaiyaraaja debuted as a film composer with Annakili in 1976. What followed was one of the most prolific runs in the history of Indian film music. He won five National Film Awards, three for Best Music Direction and two for Best Background Score, and received both the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan. His admirers call him “Isaignani,” meaning …
