Security forces in Manipur have arrested eight individuals, including five militants from various insurgent groups, drug smugglers, and suspected looters, over the last 24 hours, officials said on Tuesday. Security personnel with arms and ammunition recovered during a search operation in Kangpokpi district. (Manipur Police) According to the Manipur Police, two active cadres of the banned underground outfit People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak–Progressive (PREPAK-PRO) were arrested in a joint search operation in different parts of the state. One of the militants, identified as Saikhom Sasndip Singha (32) of Saikhom Leikai, Sonao Bazar in Cachar (Assam), was apprehended in Bidya Nagar area of Jiribam Police Station. The second, Irengbam Robinson Singh (25) of Ningthoukhong Kha Khunou, was arrested from his residence under Bishnupur Police Station limits. The commission, headed by former chief justice of Gauhati High Court Ajai Lamba, was set up on June 4, 2023. The panel, also comprising retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar, was mandated to make inquiries with respect to the causes and spread of the violence and riots targeting members of different communities, which took place in Manipur since May 3, 2023. Congress MP from Inner Manipur A Bimol Akoijam on Tuesday wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah expressing deep anguish over the “unprecedented violent crisis” in Manipur and called for “corrective measures” such as ensuring that the security forces act decisively to rein in the violence. In his letter to Shah, Akoijam also called for thoroughly investigating the allegations of involvement by illegal immigrants, foreign elements and illicit drug mafia in the present crisis.
