Rumblings in Punjab Congress after Manish Tewari’s cryptic post on rejig

A Punjab Congress reshuffle ahead of state elections next year seems to have widened discontent within the party with some leaders, mostly on condition of anonymity, expressing unease over the manner in which the changes were made. The party claims that as Manish Tewari is a Chandigarh MP, it is part of a different set up and not Punjab’s organisation. (HT Photo/File) While retaining Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as the Punjab Congress president and Partap Singh Bajwa as the Leader of Opposition, the party high command on Wednesday also appointed chairpersons for key election-related committees and named three working presidents. A public reaction came in the form of a cryptic post on X by Lok Sabha lawmaker Manish Tewari, whose name did not figure in any of the appointments. “Wish I had an antidote for the insecurities of individuals and institutions!” Tewari said on Thursday, referring to his critics in the party. “Hai bada koi avgun usme jise koi hunar aave (A person who possesses a skill often has a major flaw),” he added in his …

Manish Tewari pitches direct election of Chandigarh Mayor | Chandigarh News

2 min readChandigarhJan 29, 2026 01:15 AM IST With Chandigarh set to elect its Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor on Wednesday, Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari has called for a fundamental overhaul of the city’s civic governance structure, demanding the direct election of the Mayor for a fixed term of five years. In a statement, Tewari said Chandigarh has seen around 30 Mayors, 30 Senior Deputy Mayors and 30 Deputy Mayors since 1996, amounting to 90 office-bearers in less than three decades. He said the short one-year tenure has rendered these positions largely ineffective, leaving the Municipal Corporation plagued by persistent structural problems, including a chronic resource crunch. Tewari argued that the existing system has failed to deliver stable and accountable civic leadership. He said the only viable solution was to elect the Mayor and deputies directly by the electorate of Chandigarh for a five-year term, along with commensurate executive powers to enable them to discharge their responsibilities meaningfully. The Congress MP said he had already introduced a Private Member’s Bill in the Lok …

Former Union minister and Congress MP Manish Tewari on Thursday questioned the cremation of the two Russian tourists who died under mysterious circumstances in a hotel in Odisha last week. Wondering why the bodies of the Russian tourists were cremated and not buried as per Christian practices, Tewari wrote on Twitter, “Hercule Poirot says burnt bodies tell no tales.” Hercule Poirot is a fictional Belgian detective created by British writer Agatha Christie. Pavel Antov (65), a Russian MP and multi-millionaire businessman, died after allegedly falling from the hotel’s third floor on December 24. Vladimir Bidenov, his fellow traveller and hotel roommate, was also found dead in his room on December 22. The case piqued global interest because Antov was critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year. Tewari had earlier posted a video on Twitter highlighting the mysterious circumstances under which the two Russian tourists were found dead. “A Russian Oligarch ..a war Critic..an offbeat hotel..a colleague who dies under mysterious circumstances…a convenient window..another death..a cremation in India of two Christians …
