Misir Besra, the last remaining Central Committee (CC) and Politburo member of the CPI (Maoist), was arrested in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district on Tuesday, officials from the CRPF and Jharkhand Police said. Carrying a reward of more than ₹1 crore on information leading to his arrest, Besra was caught in the Tundi-Mandiya forest area near the Dhanbad-Giridih border while allegedly trying to flee a security operation, they said. The Chhattisgarh government on Friday ordered a legal review of cases involving individuals jailed in non-serious Maoist-related offences that did not involve loss of life, paving the way for the release of eligible accused after due legal scrutiny. The decision was made during a police meeting on relief, rehabilitation and development works in Maoist-affected areas chaired by deputy chief minister and home minister Vijay Sharma. Gadchiroli Police, in coordination with Narayanpur Police in Chhattisgarh, destroyed an alleged Maoist arms-manufacturing unit and recovered a cache of weapons and explosives during a joint operation near the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border, officials said on Thursday. Acting on intelligence inputs provided by surrendered Maoists, police teams launched a search operation in a dense forest area near Post Kakur in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district, around 7 km from the Maharashtra border. The operation was carried out under ‘Operation Antim Prahar’. According to police, the recovered items included one INSAS rifle, two single-shot rifles, two 12-bore rifles, 18 live cartridges, 25 kg of explosive material, two Claymore mines, 110 detonators, cortex wire, bomb-making material, seven BGL launchers, three tube launchers, and iron rods. Police also recovered machinery allegedly used for manufacturing weapons, including two lathe machines, motors, a grinder machine, inverter, batteries, solar plates, and bundles of wire. Officials said all recovered arms manufacturing material was destroyed on the spot. Gadchiroli Police in Maharashtra have destroyed a Maoist arms-manufacturing unit and seized equipment and materials allegedly hidden underground in a forest area of the district during a special anti-Naxal operation, officials said on Friday. The operation was carried out based on confidential information received from surrendered Maoists during interrogation under Operation ‘Antim Prahar’. According to the police, Maoists used to secretly bury weapons, explosives, and related materials in forest areas to target security personnel during various Naxal observances, election periods, and other operations. Officials said the hidden stockpile was intended for use in sabotage activities against security forces. One February morning, a group of government officials, accompanied by several local residents, set out on a gruelling five-hour trek, navigating narrow paths through hilly terrain and crossing streams without a bridge or a boat. Their destination was a remote village in Chhattisgarh’s Abujhmad — a region that had been under Maoist control for years and acted as the de facto headquarters for the banned Maoist party’s leadership. The officials, Block Education Officer, Block Resource Coordinator and Cluster Coordinator, were being taken by the village sarpanch and some residents to Karkebeda village, under Ghamandi Gram Panchayat, to set up a school there. The village, 70 km from Narayanpur district headquarters, does not have road connectivity, doesn’t appear on Google Maps, and until February, was not linked to the state’s education system. Security forces have unearthed a large cache of explosives, weapons and related equipment from a Maoist bunker in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district during a search operation, the police said on Monday. Police said security personnel discovered an underground bunker allegedly constructed and concealed earlier by Maoists during the search operation.
