The Election Commission of India (ECI) has revised the schedule for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Maharashtra, extending the timeline for claims and objections and pushing the publication of the final voter list to November 4.
The revised schedule was issued by the poll panel on August 19 following a request from the Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
Draft voter list on August 31
Under the revised timeline, rationalisation and re-arrangement of polling stations will be completed by August 24, followed by publication of the draft electoral roll on August 31.
Voters will then have one month, from August 31 to September 30, to submit claims and objections against the draft roll.
The notice period and disposal of claims and objections will continue until October 29.
Final electoral roll delayed by nearly a month
The final electoral roll will now be published on November 4, nearly a month later than the earlier October 7 deadline.
Under the previous schedule, the draft electoral roll was to be published on August 5, with claims and objections accepted until September 4. The disposal process was scheduled to continue until October 3.
The rationalisation of polling stations has also been deferred. It was originally scheduled for completion by July 29 but will now be completed by August 24.
Enumeration exercise completed
The house-to-house enumeration exercise began on June 30, with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) visiting voters and collecting Enumeration Forms.
The document collection process concluded on August 17 after the Election Commission had earlier extended the timeline to allow additional time for completion.
The original SIR schedule had envisaged preparation, training and printing between June 20 and June 29, followed by house-to-house visits from June 30 to July 29.
7.71 crore electors submitted forms
According to Maharashtra CEO data, the state has 9.78 crore electors.
Of these, 7.71 crore electors, or 78.85 per cent, submitted their filled and signed Enumeration Forms during the house-to-house exercise between June 30 and August 17.
The remaining 2.07 crore electors were categorised as “Uncollectable EF” after being found ineligible for inclusion in the draft electoral roll based on prescribed norms and the factual situation.
The SIR is being conducted with October 1, 2026, as the qualifying date for Maharashtra.
Political parties to be informed
The ECI has directed concerned officials to communicate the revised schedule and ensure that it is widely publicised through all available media.
Political parties are also required to be informed about the modified schedule in writing.
