Death of boy turns out to be murder, his mother among two arrested

The death of a three-year-old boy in Mayiladuthurai district late last month has turned out to be a case of murder. The Sembanarkoil police have arrested the child’s mother Kavipriya, 26, and Abhinesh, 31, with whom she was allegedly in a relationship, on charges of killing the child.  The police said Kavipriya was married to Kanivannan, 30, of Pagasalai village in 2019 and the couple had two minor sons one aged five and another three years old. The victim was the three-year-old child Ilan. Sources said problems arose between the couple following the alleged extramarital relationship the woman had with Abhinesh. The woman subsequently took a house on rent and resided separately at Akkur with her sons.  Abhinesh, sources said, had been frequenting the house of Kavipriya besides speaking to her over phone. On June 25, when the two were in the house, Abhinesh is alleged to have pushed the three-year-old child to the wall. The video of the incident has now gone viral on social media. The DMK had organised the event to celebrate Chief Minister MK Stalin’s birthday and the party’s “victory” in the Supreme Court on the Governor bill assent issue. The happy event took a dramatic turn when large lights on steel stands collapsed while Raja was speaking. Raja was seen dodging and stepping back just in time as the large structure came crashing down on the podium. He managed to narrowly avoid injury in the incident, which fortunately saw no casualties. Meyyanathan. The project involves clearing 22 km of the Porai canal ahead of the southwest monsoon to improve irrigation and flood management. The event was attended by District Collector H.S. Srikanth, Poompuhar MLA Nivedha M. Murugan, Sirkazhi MLA M. Panneerselvam, and Mayiladuthurai MLA S. Rajakumar. The Porai canal originates from the Puthumanniyar at Kumarakudi and irrigates 4,008 acres across six villages. It serves as a key drainage channel for five others before discharging into the Vellapallam Uppanaru. The canal is choked with silt and dense weed growth, hampering water flow, and posing risks to both irrigation and drainage. Construction of new bus stand in Mayiladuthurai nears completion

Originally slated for a six-month timeline, the project has made rapid progress, raising hopes of an early inauguration. Spread across 5,183 sq. m., the bus stand is designed to accommodate 28 buses at a time and has modern passenger amenities. There are 49 shops, 10 waiting areas for passengers, two restaurants, a luggage storage room, and two nursing rooms for mothers. It will house a reservation counter, two timekeeper cabins, a police booth, a control room, and 32 free modern toilets, including two specifically designed for persons with disabilities (PwD). The project, once operational, was expected to solve the problem of congestion in Mayiladuthurai besides improving regional connectivity. Four sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder of police head constable

The Mayiladuthurai District Sessions Court has sentenced four persons to life imprisonment on the charge of murdering a police head constable in 2012. The crime was committed when the police chased four persons smuggling liquor in a car in the Aanaikaran Sathiram police station limits. Head constable Ravichandran, 45, riding a two-wheeler, intercepted a car near the Koppiyam Arikkartti area. The accused ran over Ravichandran and sped away. Ravichandran sustained severe injuries and died in a private hospital in Chennai. The police arrested Kalaiselvan, 54, Karunakaran, 52, Shankar, 44, and Ramamurthy, 44, on murder charge. Prior to the arrests, Selvakumar, 40, and Selvam, 42, had surrendered posing as Karunakaran and Kalaiselvan. District and Sessions Judge R. Vijayakumari, who heard the case, convicted and sentenced the four main accused to life imprisonment. Selvakumar and Selvam were sentenced to seven years imprisonment. Source link

Agoram, in a case booked against him and six others, for having allegedly attempted to extort money from Dharmapuram Aadheenam Sri La Sri Masilamani Swamy by claiming to be in possession of obscene videos and audio clips related to the Mutt. Justice T.V. Thamilselvi dismissed his bail petition after a law officer informed the court that the petitioner was an accused person in more than 40 cases and that a history-sheet had been opened against him. The judge was convinced that the petitioner could tamper with evidence if he was enlarged on bail, and took note of the fact that some of the co-accused persons were still absconding. A special police team had arrested Agoram in Mumbai and remanded him to judicial custody on March 15, 2024 on the basis of a First Information Report (FIR) registered by the Mayiladuthurai police on February 25, 2024. 26-year-old man murdered in Mayiladuthurai; relatives stage protest

The Mayiladuthurai police have arrested seven persons in connection with the case. L. Ajith Kumar, who is facing trial in the murder of a person a year ago here, was out on bail. He was one of the 22 accused in that case. After appearing in the District Court for the trial he and his friend S. Saravanan, 32, were returning on a motorcycle when they were intercepted by a group at Thiruvizhandur South Street late on Wednesday. Four of the motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly attacked Ajith Kumar and Saravanan with sharp weapons. While Ajith died, Saravanan was severely injured and managed to escape from the spot. He was later rescued by his relatives and rushed to the Thanjavur Government Hospital for treatment. The police recovered Ajith’s body and sent it for postmortem to the Mayiladuthurai …

Sources in the Forest Department said the two-day exercise began on Saturday in which field-level staff, who were given special training and were equipped with binoculars and data sheets, visited various locations of the sanctuary and in adjoining villages, including Kodiyakkarai and Kodiyakkadu villages of the Vedaranyam Forest Division. The field-level staff of the department were accompanied by bird enthusiasts, volunteers from non-governmental organisations, students, teachers, and a group of members from the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). B. Ayub Khan, Forest Range Officer, Vedaranyam Range, said some of the important bird species spotted include greater painted snipe, lesser whitethroat, and jungle prinia.
